Its not hate...its just frustrating to hear this from TMG and WW when everyone was telling him this. The kids left for no money guaranteed. They were better than that. It hurt them financially and it hurt this program. Again...its not hate, its just frustration.
Exactly. It's not hate, it's concern. All three of the departees last year will not live as good of a life if they had chosen to stay in school.
Only players who should EVER abandon a free college education are those few, lucky talents that are guaranteed to sign a contract worth tens of millions after draft day that will take care of themselves and their families for life (unless they are gamblers, ie Antoine Walker, or chronic paternity suits, ie Shawn Kemp). If there is ANY doubt about getting drafted in the lottery (NBA) or 1st-2nd round (NFL), STAY IN SCHOOL.
SCHOOL IS EASY. Life outside of school, without an education, can be very hard. And no one is telling these kids that, getting it through their thick skulls, that if you think sitting in an English Literature class is boring, then try working a 10 hour shift in a service industry for little money where you're treated like nothing by customers and management alike...for YEARS...because that is where you're headed if you don't finish your degree and you don't make it in the NBA. And if you live that type of life, the temptation to make worse life decisions become more tangible--ie, alcohol and drugs.
The D League shuffle isn't worth it, particularly if you end up having to go back to school anyways after the NBA has decided you're not tall enough to play this game--this time on your own dime with "grown up" bills to pay and responsibilities to heed. 2-3 more years of school, nothing if you're out of the league before your original school plan would have ended if you stayed. Willie Warren wants to go into broadcasting--good. He'll need a degree, but now he'll have to pay for it...when he threw away the chance to earn it for free.
I have little patience for excuse making for bad personal decisions--its not good for the person's future, not good for society as a whole. "Some people aren't college material", EVERYONE is college material if they have the right damn attitude. Learning is easy, taking tests is easy, reading is easy, taking notes is easy...minimum wage is not.
I've long thought that college athletes should not only be allowed to work, but required to work during the summer. Work at McDonalds full time for 3 months. My guess is if a TMG had to work at McDs for a full summer before his freshman year, he would have sprinted to the administration office at OU and beg to be enrolled. Taking an "Art Appreciation" class en route to an accounting degree suddenly looks much more interesting...His attitude towards "skool" would change.
