Jalen Hill enters transfer portal

This really hurts, he was OU’s best player. He can be a 4-5th best player on a top 5 team.

Think this one will hurt more than folks think. Not just because he’s pretty decent player but just leadership.. on off the court.

Yep....his stats don't tell the entire story as to what he means to this team. But I can't blame him for moving on. Now if we end up with someone better to replace him, then I won't sulk.;)

Yup… I’m not sure we can get that… but we’ll see. Either way hope he gets what he wants

There are exactly zero 6-6 starting forwards in the final 4 (in fact sdsu only team has a forward under 6-7 on its roster).

There were 0 on the blue blood teams as well as Gonzaga, bama, ucla, Zona, and on and on. He is a tweener and not good enough to start for big time power 5 teams. Hell Oklahoma state doesn’t even have anyone as small as him at forward. and it showed every time we played them.

Given we are currently light years away from being a big-time power 5 team, Hill was plenty good enough to start for us. Some seem to be counting on Moser bringing in an amazing crop of portal talent. If he does, great, but he's done nothing so far to suggest that he can pull that off.

He’d probably start for sdsu

Not sure if you are referencing me but I acknowledged that there’s
no guarantee that Moser/OU are able to replace him with a better forward. There are plenty of options in the portal, but if Moser/OU can’t get them then the writing will be on the wall.

Indeed

Hopefully with the roster turnover we find some guys with size and athletic ability. While Hill was maybe our best athlete that says a lot about our team really. We should have had this massive roster turnover last year looking back.

Just because we don't have a better option doesn't mean he is what we should expect from a starter at OU.

I'd also argue that on a team performing like OU has the past couple of seasons, and with the type of talent we have on the roster, all of Hill's intangibles become less important. This teams needs scoring. It needs playmaking. It needs players that can spread the court to help others do the things I just mentioned. It needs shooting. We hired a coach known as a defensive coach, so he (PM) should be able to coach up the team defense with or without a guy like Hill.

I agree we may or may not be able to find a valid replacement, but I don't think the team was going very far with Hill starting again anyways. ESPECIALLY if we bring in a starting center that is a more traditional 5 and can't spread the court. You can't spread the court with two guys starting that can't shoot the ball.

Hill would have been the second-highest returning scorer on the team (behind only Sherfield) and at 50% (49.8) would have had the second-highest shooting percentage among returning players, behind only Godwin.

I think we are missing the point on the Hill departure. Moser has been selling culture and wanting to build the program with youth and work towards a goal of winning with his own guys.

To me, seeing Bijan (who was getting real minutes) and now Hill (a 3-year starter) leave indicates to me there is an issue with the culture of this team and makes me question if Moser is the guy. It's not really about Hill's overall talent or performance, it's about the message his departure sends. Hill could have been a great building block on Moser's culture wall, but I am afraid the wall is built on sand and is washing away as we speak.

In Hill's case, to turn down 6 figures because he likes the culture probably doesn't make a lot of sense. He obviously isn't going to the NBA.

I think Hill wants to win. He has one year left, realizes he doesn't have much of a pro future, and probably wants his last year of basketball to be spent at a place where he has a real chance to play for a team that will make the tournament and potentially make a run. I've always felt there are three main reasons why a kid would leave: playing time, winning, and not liking the coach. The first obviously isn't an issue with Jalen. The second is, and who knows about the third. I guess now we have to add a fourth, and that's NIL. If I am Hill and I feel like I can go to a better team AND get paid more, it is a fairly easy decision. But I agree with your point that it is concerning to see guys who are playing big minutes leave. It's one thing to lose guys who are buried on the bench. When a starter who the coach really wants to stay decides to leave, there is something to be concerned about.
