Jalen Hill enters transfer portal

If I remember correctly, Porter thought Jalen Hill was the best defensive player in the country... Unless he was full of crap, this isn't mutual.

Yup. OU would like for him to stay, but at what price? Coach mentioned at the end of the season Jalen is looking for a big NIL deal, and vbdad mentioned he's getting offers close to $250k. I'm not sure what budgets OU's collectives have for NIL deals in men's basketball, but the $250k can be spent better. Hill fills a role around the edges, but he's not someone you can build a team around (offensively or defensively).

If Hill were going to be a sophomore or even a junior next season, you might have a point. But he's a fifth-year senior--he in no way would hold back the team from "moving forward." Rather, as a gritty, tough-minded, defensive player with four years of Big 12 experience who also contributes offensively, he could have been a great leader for a very inexperienced team.

Whether he would be a starter at texas, KU, Baylor or KSU matters not one whit. He would have been a valuable contributor in many ways to the young, inexperienced and likely average-at-best team OU will very be fielding next season.

The notion that Porter Moser will bring in enough talent to knock Hill down the 7th or 8th slot seems a major stretch. At worst, he would have been the back-up at the 4 and that would have only happened if Cooper proves to be a frosh phenom of major proportions. Even then, the two would surely have been splitting minutes.
My point is if we are going to be more competitive in our own conference, Jalen Hill CANNOT be better than a 6th or 7th man. If he is, Moser failed in the portal and failed to bring in better talent.

If we are saying that Jalen is talented enough or has earned more than that then we are accepting another play-in position for the Big XII tournament next year at 7th or worse.

If he is relegated to 6th man as Moser either a) decides to go with the young guns in the starting lineup to build for the future because he IS a 5th-year player or b) Moser lands a better option(s) in the portal, maybe Jalen isn't willing to be a player off the bench at OU and he decided to enter the portal. Jalen will get some suitors, but if he truly is looking at the NIL deal that has been discussed, as much as I like Jalen, he has overestimated his worth. His worth on a good team is a 6th or 7th man. Not the 2nd best player.

Either we get the talent to put Hill on the bench or we finish in 9th or 10th again. In either case, it is likely Hill, nor Moser, liked that option.

Tanner Groves was hamstrung because he couldn't quit fouling or make a wide open 3.

That’s a fair point on Tanner’s fouling. Let’s simply focus on Hill.

Jalen hill does not fit in a 4 out 1 in offense. He can’t play outside because he can’t shoot. He can’t play inside because he is 6-6.

I think we all agree Hill can be "over-recruited" if you land the right guys in the portal - big if.

But my point is what PM has said about building a program and wanting 4-5 year guys to play. With NIL this idea may be antiquated, but it's his stance and Hill is EXACTLY the kind of player and person you want on your team.

All PM did last year was praise the D played by Hill and have Hill guard the other team's best player - whether they were a 1, 2, 3 or 4 on the court.

To me, this is exactly who PM would be targeting with all those culture wall comments. Maybe the NIL lure will be strong with Jalen and I get that. But it begs a bigger question.

So is PM's idea on how to build a team in the NIL world faulty?

I believe it is outdated and I think his time at OU needs to come to an end - the longer you wait the further in the hole you get.

During the season, I referenced KSU and ISU and was told those were outliers, but I think PM and his idea about building a program might be the outlier here.

Hope I am wrong. I love PM's energy and the things he says, but I am just not sure they work anymore.

I think a LOT of the coaches are still figuring out how to navigate the NIL/portal world. It being so now really changes the landscape.

I the old landscape you wanted those 4-5 years guys and wanted to build a culture around them....in todays NCAA you got starters leaving tournament teams....some of it is baffling. I think a lot goes on behind closed doors and it is changing how you can build a team. Hopefully I'm wrong but that is the way it looks.

Did OU run a ton of 4 out? I had trouble knowing what they were running possession by possession. Hill is a slasher, every team has them.

Agree with Jay that it may be that Porter's approach to building a program is outdated and not possible in the NIL / free transfer era. I guess we will have to wait and see. In any event, like Jay, I worry about it.

Love Jalen, but I agree with Tiny that he is not really suited very well for a 4 out, 1 in, offensive scheme. I wanted for Jalen to stay but appreciate the years he has given us and believe he has every right to do whatever is best for him, financially or otherwise.

And finally, I think it is a little early to get on Porter related to the portal, as we haven't seen what he is or will do to fill in the roster. I don't see any point in complaining about something that may or may not come to pass. Lets see what he gets done.

BtW, where are we at now with numbers? How many portal adds do we need? Anyone keeping track?

Cowboy if we can't complain about things which have not transpired, should we even have a message board :ez-roll:

Unless specifically requested by the player....

Perhaps contracts are in order? Maybe schools should be signing players to 1, 2, 3, or 4 year contracts? if the recruit agrees to 2 years, they can't transfer without penalty. If they only agree to 1 year, they have no guarantee of a spot on next years team, etc.

That could provide some more certainty perhaps?

None of the universities want contracts. That would bring contract law and employer/employee status and it would be the end of college athletics.

The whole thing is murky and it’s not likely to end well.

I say crab that cash while you can..You go Jalen

'ships are 1 yr deals now...they just resign every year. Unless you are suggesting 2/3/4 yr contracts. The prob is coaches can move/fired during that time...I guess it would then make the contract null/void.

my "guess" is a lot of these guys know the odds of actually getting played to play ball are very small...there's a finite space there. So, if they can make a couple 100K their Sr yr or 2 that's a helluva a startout fund for life.

As I stated it took me over 15 yrs to make MAYBE 500K...teacher..ya I know...I chose it. To make 500K in 2 years as a 21/22 yr old...WOW.

Hell, even 100K or 200K what a great financial jump start in life.

247's Eric Bossi wrote the following in a portal roundup article:

One other recent portal entrant that really stands out is Oklahoma forward Jalen Hill. A grad transfer, Hill has started every game for the Sooners over the last few years and is a solid, well-rounded dude who can play at the three or the four. He’s not a particularly dangerous jump shooter, but does some dirty work, is a good free-throw shooter and could be the type of veteran a team on the verge of competing needs to push them to another level.
