Eric Maynor-Thunder, Blake Griffin-Clippers, Taylor Griffin-Suns, Keith "Tiny" Gallon-Bucks, Willie Warren-Clippers, and recruited Larry Sanders so he gets a half for that. Enough said. Post what you want. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!:clap:jcapel

I don't care if we never get another NBA player ever again as long as we don't have a year like last year. If we are winning and going to NCAA Tournaments it doesn't really matter if we have NBA talent.

I don't disagree, but generally NBA talent will help you with winning and going to NCAA tournaments. I'm not saying you can't do it without NBA talent, but it does help.

We certainly don't want players like last year that were already in the NBA from day one. We need guys that want to play team ball right away. NBA is something they can think about later on.

Having 5 players you signed to LOIs getting drafted in the NBA in such a brief time is very impressive, no doubt.

But, as you know, Faithful, that is nowhere near as important as being able to say this: Jeff Capel = NCAA Tournaments.

As we saw last year, 'NBA talent' is fairly worthless if there is no high caliber character to go along with it.

Good post. It is time for everyone to lower his or her expectations for OU basketball. From now on, qualifying for the tournament should satisfy Sooner fans. After all, OU is not Butler.

I agree. I hope Jeff learned a valuable lesson this past season. Recruiting legitimate NBA caliber type players will always result in a disaster. lol If Jeff had done his homework, he would have realized 2 of the kids he recruited over the past couple of years had some baggage. As a result, he ended up getting burned by them.

Speaking purely of Sooners (and please on Larry Sanders) I dont think having 3 second round picks along with another freshman being undrafted is a ringing endorsement to recruits. What are you going to say ? You come to OU as a Mcdonalds player you go in round 2 ?

Blake is Blake.

I'd be much more impressed if Capel was responsible for their actual development into NBA players, rather than simply being able to recruit guys who already have the measurables and strong likelihood of making it to the league.

That's not necessarily a dig at Capel, but rather a realistic look at the real relationship between NCAA basketball and NBA players. The vast majority of kids drafted from college were likely NBA players (eventually) before they set foot on any campus.

The list of kids who were unlikely to make it to the league coming out of HS, but developed in a program and ended up getting drafted is a pretty short one, IMO.

Hard to argue with this.

How many players did Kelvin Sampson put in the NBA? 1 - Eduardo Najera

How many times did he miss the NCAA Tournament? 1 - 2004 (20 win team that should have been in)

Who here still enjoyed the Sampson era despite the fact that we weren't putting players into the league? I know I did.

I think our expectations under Capel have been lowered like it or not. Going to the NIT next year will be great for some of our fans here. I'm not sure I think it'll be great, but it'll be an improvement from last year. Still not where our program should be.

There is nothing wrong with having low expectations. Since Billy left Norman, OU basketball has been all about LOW expectations. With the current coaching staff Jeff has in place, I don't expect things will get much better. The only person who is responsible for the current state of OU basketball is Joe C., and we all know his %$@* does not stink. I didn't know cr*p was considered a bad word. lol

I love this board. Everyone was on cue. Nice job. Oh well, a fact is a fact. Looks like too many people don't think the coach will catch up to the talent he's recruiting. For those with the negative responses. Give yourself a pat on the back. You fell in line rather nicely. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!:jcapel

I believe Capel will continue to recruit NBA caliber players, but he will be more cautious of prospects with issues.

He doesn't want another 2009-2010 season.

HW you make a good point. He should never stop recruiting NBA talent. He has to evaluate individuals better and make sure they will have a better chemistry make up. I truly believe he has the moxy to coach a basketball team on all fronts. Some guy named Joe does too. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!:clap

I think Jeff Capel is a young coach learning some hard lessons. He can judge basketball and athletic talent, but he needs to sharpen his skills on evaluating character and personalities , both in players he recruits and coaches he hires.

If he can't improve in that area, then he will not be a head coach much longer.

I will take Kelvin Sampson consistently putting together really good college teams, winning 4 big 12 championships, advancing to the final four, and taking OU to 10 or 11 straight NCAA appearances than putting some clowns in the NBA and only going to the dance 50% of the time.

Nobody cares about NBA players when you suck.
