Joe is F'in it up

He's been coaching a long time, man. That's a long time to be "finding better opportunities" every five years. You think we're a destination? What makes us so different from Illinois or Florida? UNLV? Sure we're a better program than most, but you're fooling yourself if you think he'll stay.

AGAIN. It's not a BAD move. Just not a OMGWTFBBQAWESOME one. Geez, people.

He doesn't have to stay, just get the program back on track.

Joe C is not going to hire Fran effing Fraschilla to coach our basketball team.

If he stayed here 5 years and had us in the NCAA tourney every year with an elite 8 or final 4, then I would be fine with him leaving if it was for a better job.

I think he's getting closer to retirement and I think he would stay at the right job until retirement. He's had plenty of suitors come after him since he has been in Vegas and he hasn't moved, so maybe he's decided he's done moving every 5 years or so.

Florida offered him huge dollars. If I remember correctly, they offered him the largest contract in D1 basketball at that point to go to Gainesville from KSU. He couldn't turn it down. Then Illinois offered a big contract and Illinois is a good program so he would have been crazy to turn that down. Then the NBA came calling and he would have been crazy to turn that down.

Do I think he's the 2nd coming of John Wooden or Mike Krzyzewski? No, but I think he is a very good option to rebuild the program and get it back on solid footing. He will win a bunch of games and he will outcoach Rick Barnes, Travis Ford, Scott Drew, and a few other coaches in the conference regularly.

If you guys are fine with getting a guy that will just get us back on track, then he's your man. He will do that, and then leave. At least we'll be in a better bargaining position in five years? No probation and a winning program would make the place more attractive to a coach.

apparently someone sent Joe the NCAA's official "List of Yawnable Coaching Candidates"

There is some smoke on the Pastner front now. He could be using us for a raise, but I say that he could have more success here than Memphis. Pastner will recruit Texas very well and coming to OU will be an easier sell than coming to Memphis (in terms of proximity to home). He would not be here for the long term, but he could get us back while he is here. He has been my top choice for a while and will bring some good talent with him.

What is so impressive about Pastner anyway?

SHaka and Tad both coach circles around him and he will always be waiting for Az or something equivalent.

His recruiting does not make up for us being able to get a better coach. He won't outtalent the rest of our conference.

lol, the late Patrick Dennehy (who quit during the middle of the game) was a Fraschilla recruit. Bottom line is all Fraschilla could do in three years was muster a second round NIT berth. His inner city style doesn't fit in this part of the nation. Let's just go get Bobby Gonzalez, he did a great job at Manhattan then flamed out at Seton Hall...pretty much the same coach in my opinion.

What he said.

The Fraschilla era at UNM was almost pure comedy (except for the eventual situation with Dennehy). He was hailed as the holy savior who was going to the promised land, and he even talked it up a lot. His best team was actually his first, and that was with a roster that was mostly "Bliss holdovers," who also got no respect or credit locally for finishing second in the new MWC. They settled for the NIT, ending a streak of four straight NCAA bids.

But, unlike Bliss, Fran was allowed to "clean house" (Bliss got crucified for any player transfer, even if it was amicable). The popular, but misinformed, opinion locally was that Fran was going to bring in big-time talent and roll through the MWC and straight into the Elite 8. It didn't happen.

Then, the rosters that were all "Fran guys" had major chemistry problems and other off-court issues. The Fran roster that was supposed to get UNM to the "next level," never got out of the NIT. And his last team, the one that got some preseason hype outside of New Mexico, went 16-14.

As far as I'm concerned, the guy is doing fine at ESPN and ought to stay there.

What is special about Pastner is the fact that he could actually get talent infused in to this program. He has done a solid job at Memphis after his team was gutted by Calipari when he left for UK. He has a highly ranked player, Adonis Thomas (5 star SF), committed to him for next year and while I don't think he will come play for OU (he is from Memphis), there may at least be a shot at it. It will be imperitive for a coach to compete for talent in Texas for the next few years with BCG at Tech and the already planted Barnes and Turgeon. Pastner may do better recruiting than all three.

where do you people come up with this idea that we will get some recruiting phenom and out-talent everyone?

it's not gonna happen and, frankly, it's a horrible approach. It's a CAPELESQUE approach.

Better recruiting is great. but you need someone first who can coach the recruits OU can get of its' own accord and win games.

Rely on recruiting and we will get stuck again like we did with TMG et al

Where are you getting that he is not a good coach? He went 24 - 10 in his first year with very little talent (Calipari took all his commitments to UK) and went 25 - 10 this year and won his conference tournament and got to the NCAAs. They are in a bad conference but he has performed better in his two years than many of the other coaches on our ever dwindling list. Just saying he is probably our best option at this point.

Agree.

These doomsday threads really crack me up. Sheesh, get a grip.

I agree with this and this is why I have not been excited about Pastner up to this point.

I say Kruger, then Stallings, then Boyle.

I would be OK with any of those 3. Shaka has been very impressive the last 2 weeks, but i know little about him or Pastner.

I would like to hear that we at least contacted Stevens though.
