Jones or Grooms

Cam Clark should. Move Neal to the 3 and Fitz with Osby/Goff inside.

No thanks. Cam isn't a two. At all. And Neal really isn't a 3. Cam is the defintion of a college 3. That is where he needs to play. Build the team around that.

My ideal starting lineup is:

PG: Jeremy Jones/Carl Blair
SG: Calvin Newell/Steve Pledger
SF: Cameron Clark/Tyler Neal
PF: Romero Osby/Robert Goff
PF: Andrew Fitzgerald/Robert Goff

3-man post rotation, bring Blair and Pledger off the bench.

Newell has more quickness, strength, and athletic ability than Steve Pledger. He has more potential. If the game slows down for him and he has a good off-season to impress a new coaching staff, he could start in front of Pledger and be a surprise player.

This is what I HOPE happens.

As much potential as newell might have, you can't start him over pledger. not going to happen

Sure you can...

If the light turns on for Calvin and Pledger stays the same, Pledger can become a 3pt gunner off the bench, which is what he is best suited to do in the first place.

I'm not ready to give up on Pledger's shooting. That kid should be knocking down 40-42% of his threes. IF he does that, he'll be more valuable than anything Newell can do next year.

Newell has som physical talents, but he doesn't seem to be a very good basketball player. I say that, meaning, he doesn't defend at all, doesn't take care of the ball, and doesn't do much off the ball (offense or defense). In other words, he has a ways to go. Maybe LK shortens that path for him, but I still think Pledger offers more next year.

haha then I'm sure you gave Capel a pass on signing TMG thinking he could change him

Actually I did.
I had no problem with Capel signing him.
But now we have clear evidence that Capel couldn't coach/control players like TMG and Willie. (I think Gallon was slowly coming around but I don't think it was necessarily because of anything Capel did).

I'm not familiar with Kruger's history on this matter.
I have to think he's done something right based on his success.

Pledger does one thing and not particularly well.
Newell has more potential/athletic ability.
He has the potential to be a well rounded shooting guard.

i don't know how you can base your ideal lineup off the assumption that a light is going to come on for newell.

Its all potential until he shows it. I can see a lot of potential in Pledger as well. he's quicker than most people give him credit for

I don't think Newell will ever be a well rounded shooting guard, b/c he isn't built for it. There is a reason most OU fans penciled him in as a reserve or starting pg when he was recruited.

And as ordinary as Pledger's 35% three point shooting was, that is still leaps and bounds better than Newell's 27%.

That reason is because he is 6'1''. Thats it.

JR Raymond was a big time shooting guard at OU, 6'1'' 170 pounds.

Having seen Newell, I'd be shocked if he was even 6'.

He also isn't known as a shooter. He's more of a drive-type of guy. And he doesn't defend well. There are a lot of good scoring shooting guards out there, and not being able to defend them well, if you are a shooting guard, isn't a good thing.

I see the potential, but if this kid is going to be starter-worthy, I don't think it'll be until his senior year.

I think that you could see some of Neal at the PF at times as well depending on who we are playing.

Quite frankly, many OU fans proved to me long ago that they know very little about basketball simply because of a lot of statements made on here. There are some that DO know some hoops but where fans on a message board 'pencil' a guy in means absolutely NOTHING to me unless that person is the coach. I think MOST fans HOPE that anyone we sign will start and be a stud but they are smart enough to know better. I think Newell is definitely more athletic than Pledger but that doesn't mean he is better....but it doesn't mean he won't be. The only people's opinion that matters are on the bench making decisions and I trust that they will make the best decision for the team, no matter who starts.

So we shouldn't talk about anything OU basketball related, b/c we aren't the OU coaches, and they make the final decisions?

Gotcha.

But to be fair we only know how these guys fit into Capels system. We have no idea what Lon will get them to buy into, what he will focus on in practice, and who will fit his system best. I have a feeling everybody will be better defensively though

William, Sam or anyone?

I have not kept up with recruiting as much this year and don't know too much about these two. Which one do you think would be a better fit for this squad and the players that we are returning? Which one do you think we have the better chance of landing?

The interpretation I get is Jones is very interested in OU, however OU is very interested in Grooms.
