Jones or Grooms

You guys are alot higher on Newell than I am. He is just not skilled enough to play the point for me, and doesn't shoot it nearly good enough to play the 2. His shot really needs some work, IMO. I know he is young and has some nice athleticism, but he has a long ways to go to be a starting guard on a good Big XII team.

That is kind of the way I feel. The list of athletic, but not overly talented guards that have come and gone at OU is pretty long. Most were nothing more than decent backups, at best. I have hope that Newell as a jr/sr might be able to help out some. Not much hope that he does that next year though.

Both need to be on the bench. BUt since we dont have anyone else.... Just because Pledger is 6-4 and Newell is 6-1 means squat, Newell is quicker, faster, and can probably jump higher. Pledger actually has a year on him in experience, and that didn't really make a difference. And I do know for a guy whose "thing" is shooting, besides like two games, Pledger was awful. And, he's slow. I'd reserve my judgement on Newell until after next year. As they say most players make the most improvement from FR-SOPH.

I tend to agree with you. I just don't see all of the athleticism in Newell that others keep talking about. He doesn't blow by people with his speed, and I have not seen any exceptional quickness or leaping ability. He can only dribble with one hand, and he shows no signs yet of being a spot up or off the dribble shooter. Pledger at least keeps defenses honest because of the THREAT that he creates from the perimeter.

Last yrs scouting reports usually included not allowing Cade and Pledge to catch and shoot. I am by no means giving up on Newell, but I really think that he has alot to improve before he can truly help us in the next few yrs.

Recruits can't talk to the media during official visits so there wont be any info till his visit is over.

A tweet by Tyler Neal a few minutes ago confirmed he was on campus more or less.
