Josh Watkins (6'1'' 190)

MVP of the National Juco Tournament.

From New York Wadleigh High. Averaged 14 points, five rebounds and four assists this year while leading Howard to the JUCO national title game win over Three Rivers. He outplayed Carter in that game to earn tourney MVP honors. Watkins has been talking with Cincinnati, West Virginia and Florida State, among others.

Watkins, who sparked the comeback in both the title game and the semifinal win over CEU, was named the tournament MVP. He tallied 26 points and seven rebounds in the title game and averaged 19.8 points over the tourney.

He visits Cincinnati this weekend.

Do we still have a shot?
I know there was talk about him maybe visiting OU right after the NJCAA tournament but there hasn't been much since then.

He would be a perfect fit and would cap off this class/roster nicely.

I mean, it's ok to get a Josh Watkins, but if we can get one of these two pgs, it would be a huge plus. We need a pg for the future, we don't need a bandaid at that position. Watkins could maybe split times with one of these two guys if we get one of em.

Lloyd seems like a guy that could really learn and grow from early playing time. I think he has the most to offer of all the guys we are supposedly in on. Assuming there is no huge ego or catastrophe awaiting for him, he is also a guy you can see being here all 4 year and being a solid player at the end of it. May not be spectacular, but will be a constant and will have some very noteworthy games. Just my thoughts and opinion though.

I would take Watkins and try to get a 2011 point guard who can sit for a year behind Watkins and then give him 3 to play as a starter if possible. Kyan Anderson out of North Crowley would be my choice for 2011 point guards.

I'd love to have Watkins and Newell or Lloyd if possible. You need 2 true points and the freshman could learn and come along slowly. Capel has shown he'd play 2 points together at times too.

We've only had one pg visit. I think he's first on the priority list. I'm not even sure we're in the running for Loyd or Watkins. Newell is probably better than both.

It doesn't sound like we made much of an impression (at least according to this source).

Another Evelyn Mack Academy product is also wide open in his recruitment.

Calvin Newell, a strong and athletic 6-0 guard who really increased his college interest this past season, reportedly has offers from Baylor, Marshall, Niagara, Providence, SMU and West Virginia.

However, head coach Will Sperrow said Newell has not decided where he will spend his next four years, nor has he decided when he will announce his choice.

“Not sure yet,” Sperrow told NBE Basketball Report over the weekend.
