I may have missed this topic along the way. If so, forgive me and refer me to the thread.

If not, can someone help me to understand why NMulkey starts the game to give a POTENTIAL advantage to possession of the first play (jump ball) versus VPLouis? Maybe I'm missing something.

We tended to lose the tip with Vivi. We have failed to get the tip once with Nancy. First possession is almost like having a turnover to start the game.

Ok, that much I knew. Much greater chance of winning the tip-off. BUT the tip-off is not a determining factor for winning games. Many a team has won the game opening tip only to have their butts handed to them by games end.

Furthermore, starting for ones team is typically an incentive based opportunity for each position, awarded to the player that has EARNED the opportunity to start. One typically earns a starting position by practicing hard, following directions, achieving goals, abiding by team rules and by having more productivity during the game.

So is it more important to get the tip-off, or more important to reward VPLouis for her hard work? Just wondering.

On her show, Sherri says there are two reasons:
1. We get the tip.
2. It provides Vivi with the chance to see what they are doing so she has an idea of what to do when she enters the game.

Ok. #2...really? Does Vivi have class when the team is watching scouting film or missing practice against the scout team? Just seems odd. I don't recall her using this same strategy with NGriffin. Maybe it's a new thing.

Come on SB. You're smarter than that........I hope.

It gives us one more possession in almost EVERY game. If it comes down to 2 or 3 points at the end - or the need to maintain such a lead, it separates winning from losing.

Why in the universe would you want a team to sacrifice that advantage if it is available? To do so would be exceptionally dumb.

Sweetest, no need to "hope". I am. You don't really believe that, do you? I could see your point if she brought NMulkey in for a jump ball for an OT. I did a little research to see if there was any rhyme or reason; any potential "superstition" stuff (after two losses, NMulkey starts and then they win), but there's none of that. Maybe VPLouis just played horribly for several games and then NMulkey starts. Nope. The only thing that is consistent is NMulkey has started every game since conference began regardless of her or VPLouis's stats.

If your theory made sense, the greats and every other coach with a player taller than their starters would utilize it. Surely Geno would. He consistently starts a 6'3" (the tallest of starters) with a 6'5" and 6'6" on the bench. I guess I could look at Roy Williams (another of SC's mentors) and see what he's doing, but it's really not worth the time, because your theory makes absolutely no sense, but I tried to give you benefit of doubt. What you've stated really makes no sense, but hey...it's your opinion.:D #reallydumb

Edit: ...and kudos to VPLouis for continuing to play hard with a good attitude whether she starts or not. #classact

Bay, your stuff gets old. You pick a fight with Sweetest, and you don't even have the slightest clue that it is exactly what Sherri said.

If you haven't noticed, it is exactly a desire to get the first possession, which is almost as good as having the opposition give you a turnover. You get it. Then, Nancy doesn't remain in the game for a full rotation. Usually, she is pulled within the first two minutes of playing time. She was in the game for one reason---to get the additional possession. Why give up a couple of points? And, yes, Vivi can get a read on exactly what happens on the court before having to face it. It is easier to see from the sidelines.

I still contend that the POTENTIAL of a first possession for the start of a game is not worth a taller player starting while the true starter sits. And your contention that she can get "a read" from the sideline...really? :ez-laugh: Hell, get a READ in practice while watching video and get a READ when another player relieves her. Do you really believe she gets a READ that benefits anything the first seconds or minutes of the game. I doubt very seriously if they have won every possession. There's more involved than height advantage for the tip-off. That's a grabbing at straws strategy if I've ever heard one. But again...it's your opinion. #dumbanddumberopinions

PS...every post is not a fight. #tooemotional

It is not my opinion. It is what Sherri said, directly, on TV. Are you calling Sherri Coale a liar?

Wrong again, SB.

We have played 13 conference games so far. Nancy has won the opening tip 12 times. The only exception was a game in which the opposing player actually jumped sideways, knocked Nancy sideways, and managed to grab the ball. Clear foul - but the worst ref in the conference was afraid to call it - or unwilling to.

But then, you probably don't realize there is a lot of difference between 6' 9" and 6'3". There is. Hard to even compare.

I suspect we will win the jump tonight too - as disappointing as that will be for you.

There you go again, SB.

Nancy won the tip one more time! That's 13 out of 14.

:D :D :D

You are hilarious! That tip-off win didn't help one durn bit when Texas, WVU and Baylor handed it to us. Woo hoo...we win the tip-off and then take a whooping. Do things that will help prepare to win for the 40 minutes after the tip-off. How about practicing some post moves, entry passes, boxing out and taking care of the ball versus worry about one extra possession. Then again, that would require seeing the forest beyond the trees...might be asking too much! :ez-laugh:

Our offense is sucking wind tonight.....

Move the ball....side to side, not six foot at a time.

Really disappointed that the coaching staff has no game plan for when Mulkey is in the game. Offense of Defense. She's clearly at a disadvantage when she's further than eight foot from the goal, and it seems that's where she spends most of her time. :facepalm

Has Little scored tonight??? Everything seems to come up short.

It has been a frustrating first half.

We obviously were hoping to hit a bunch of 3's early - but instead wasted a good number of possessions trying and missing.

I'm not sure why you would keep doing that when you are not shooting well. We are 3 out of 15 = 20%. Terrible to shoot so many when you are clearly off. They are at 50% on 3's - even though they normally can't hit those very well.

We finally started going inside and at least stopped falling further and further behind.

This does not look like it will be a great game for ViVi, but she did score almost all her points in the 2nd half last time out. So let's hope.

No worries Tooney! We won the tip-off...that is strategic and one of NMulkey's greatest attributes. However, the TxTech player did out jump her during the tip-off and knocked it out of bounds. Yippee!!!!! :facepalm

At least we had the initial possession!:D
