just for fun....predict next years starting 5

Yeah but he didn't have any eyebrows. I think it was only top 5 recruits able to produce facial hair.

I will agree, not many didn't start but plenty started the season as a reserve. Some, like Josh Selby were sidelined by the NCAA, but once he was eligible he was a reserve for a few games.

The biggest problem is until 2008 or 09, so many of the top 5 went to the draft. So, not many to choose from some of the years...

Rivals only goes back 10 years so I started with the 2003 class and Charlie was in it...some luck, but it took me 3 minutes. Kind of funny, actually.

Charlie Villanueva didn't start his frosh year at UCONN. He came off the bench.

That's one and it took me 3 minutes to find it.

So you found the one. That still makes it a fraction of a percent. He might be the only one not barring things like sanctions, grades, etc.

Also, that squad in which he came off the bench won a National Championship.

No one said he isn't good enough to start. Just putting words in the mouths of us saying it shouldn't be an absolute guarantee.

National Championship!!!!

And I don't think that We have a Emeka Okafor or a Josh Boone on this team.

But would he have started from day 1 if he hadn't been sidelined by the NCAA??? I think most would say YES!

But you said to jmizzy:

(2) I want you to find 1 top 5 recruit out of high school that is a bust and/or did not start as a freshman(if he went to college). B/c Randle is a top 5 player out of high school.

I found one, and I'm certain more than 1 existed for the last 10 years because some of the names I didn't recognize. Shannon Brown is one that started most games for Mich State his frosh year, but was a reserve for 6 or 7 games. I would guess he started the season as a reserve and after he proved he was ready to make the jump, Izzo put him in the starting 5. I think most of the people on this thread who are saying "Randle isn't guaranteed a starting spot from day 1" are saying it because it's not uncommon for a coach to start the season with a highly regarded player as a reserve before placing them as a starter. Some kids respond better to coming off the bench. Not as much pressure, and able to let it loose for a few games.

Wayman Tisdale didn't start the first few games his frosh year. I'm 99% sure he was a reserve for at least 3-4 games, maybe more. That's 2.

and just a likely randle plays the 5

Not likely as UK also signed James Young (another SF type) and Dakari Johnson (a true college center). While Noel is almost a sure thing to go pro, their other center Cauley-Stein not as much. Randle has said more than once he wants to go to a place where he can make an impact on Day one.

Hence, the prevailing thought that the Randle commitment rests a lot on where Wiggin goes. But that's not just my opinion. The leading recruiting sites and the majority of the UK fan base say the same thing.

wiggin is going to start at the 3 no matter what team he goes to .. and no matter who comes back ..

Andrew Wiggin

Strengths:
Andrew is very skilled and very athletic young wing. He's a long, skilled perimeter player who can play the 2, 3 or 4. It's his physical talent that makes him stand out right now. He has a complete package from being an elite athlete to possessing high perimeter skill which includes a three point shot, a dribble pull up game and explosiveness and body control to hang in the air take contact and still dunk it on a defender. He has all the tools to be special.

It isn't likely we get Randle but I know the coaches believe he is a one and done player and would most likely start early in the season. By the way we started two freshman over returning starters this year.

You have issues!!!

Your trying so hard to prove me wrong that you throw Villanueva in my face..He did come off the bench...but they did win a National Championship. I guess I was wrong about him not starting. And your right about Brown. He only started 24 out of 30 games.

Just as Booger and Carlweathers said, the argument has changed. Now that Booger has shown an example or 2 , the argument is now who didn't start on a Nat'l TITLE TEAM???

The original debate occurred because it was said someone of Randle's stature would be GURANTEED a starting spot, and anyone who thinks not doesn't know hoops. That was the premise of the original argument.

The truth of the matter is an old school coach like LK might find 10000000 reasons to not start a frosh immediately. I have given you all several reasons, and Booger followed up with more.

I'll say again, what if the kid is lazy and doesn't work as hard in college? Look further than Sooner football for that scenario. What if other guys are playing lights out by then??? M'Baye and Spangler could easily be the 1st day starters. Heck many here had both Osby & M'Baye as lottery picks before they set foot on the LNC in a REAL game. Remember that???

Booger brought up a great example I remembered and didn't get back to list. Billy Tubbs brought WAYMAN TISDALE off the bench his 1st few games. He had his coming out party against UNLV a few games into the season. Are you kidding me????? WWT came off the bench his first few games because we had experienced guys. No doubt he was the best player in OKla. before he graduated at BTW, but Tubbs elected to go with Big Time Jones at the center, initially.

Just admit you can't guarantee a player as a day one starter. Stop trying to change the argument. Not one of us who dissented said Randle didn't have the tools, potential, and likelihood of starting, we said he isn't guaranteed to start with an old school coach like LK. If Tisdale can come off the bench behind Big Time Jones, then anyone can come off the bench.......

Off topic funny story...back in the day, Charles "Big Time" Jones was a center for Tubbs early teams. He was a 6'10" center who was a little bulkier than Stacey King (for comparison) but was fairly mobile for his size. Jones missed the team flight to Hawaii for a tournament because he overslept. From that point on, Coach Tubbs called him "Bed Time" Jones. Classic Tubbs. :ez-laugh:
