I am a coach at a small school in Kansas, and got a chance to see Buddy Hield tonight at our track meet in Cheney, Kansas. He ran the 800 and got second, while running it in 2:00 minutes with a strong wind blowing. I visited with one of his coaches and she had nothing but great things to say about him. He doesn't train for track, but likes to come and compete and she said that he is a great competitor in everything he does. He was also very courteous and polite, and was wearing OU wristbands. His coach said that he can not wait to get to OU and has nothing but great things to say about Kruger and his staff. I did not realize how big and strong he is. He is very muscular and well put together. I went to visit with him, but he was pretty tired after the race, so I left him alone.

That's a great time (2:00 at 800m) for a young man who is his size! Love his athleticism and competitiveness. Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the info Wyatt. Can't wait to see these freshmen come in and compete.

Thanks, Wyatt! I really like what I have seen and read about Buddy Hield. He's a competitor and a winner, as are all three of the freshmen guards OU signed.

I believe there is a very good chance that Hield, Hornbeak and Cousins will play a much bigger role than most people think this fall. I'm anxious to see what they can do!

Isn't 800 meters slightly farther than 1/2 mile meaning he is running a sub 4 minute mile pace. That is impressive.

Yes that's correct on the distance, however you can't really compare the pace of an 800m race to that of a mile run. Still, impressive for a kid who supposedly doesn't train for track.

Thanks Wyatt! I was just in Cheney as well (playing golf), strange! Where do you coach?

good report, wyatt...thx. looking forward to seeing the three feshmen this fall, all good gets by LK. i think all three play right away and will be a big part of the team's success. I'm already excited for the season to start. sounds like LK has recruited and signed real competitors as well as quality young men. Very nice to see!

I live in Wichita, but am the football, track coach, and athletic director at Udall high school. It is a 1A school 30-minutes southeast of Wichita. We have a 6-4, 190, pound stud junior that led us to the state finals in basketball this year, and has averaged over 25 points a game as a sophomore and junior. He transferred to us from Ozark, Missouri, and he is a heck of a kid and basketball player. He is also an all-league quarterback and defensive end, as well as a great pitcher and hitter. I keep trying to get him to send film to Coach Kruger, because I think that he can play at OU after a redshirt year. He is so smooth, he makes everything look easy. He can shoot the three, take it to the hole, solid ball handler, and can bench 300 pounds. Who do I need to contact about this kid? He is also a great student and kid.

Buddy and Cousins will play a bunch for us next year. Don't be surprised to see Hornbeak also be in the rotation.

If there's 80 minutes per game for the 1 & 2 position and Bird gets 30 and Grooms get about 20 that's only 30 minutes split between 3 guys. Unless they go to a 3-guard line up and push Pledger to the 3 spot.

You're thinking like I do, but the 3-guard lineup is a real possibility. Throw Cam Clark in there and you have 120 minutes to divide between Grooms, Pledger, Clark, and maybe 2 of the 3 freshmen.

Inside we have Osby, Fitz, M'Baye for most of the other 80 minutes. Bennett will get some time, too, and they might experiment early in the season with M'Baye on the wing.

My guess is they will play 10-11 kids in the non-conference season and then be down to a 8 man rotation by the end of conference play. I'm betting that 2 of the freshman will eventually make that 8 man rotation.

I'm excited about seeing the team develop next year because we will have some depth and competition for playing time. Also, they can adjust to styles of the other teams by going big or small. I like having options.

Why don't you call or email one of these guys:http://www.soonersports.com/sports/m-baskbl/archive/coaching_staff.html

The worst thing they do is ignore the call or email. If they do that, they are stupid. If part of my job was to find high school talent and someone was nice enough to help me, I would pay attention. Now if that person turned out to be nice enough to help me every year and was constantly way off base, I might start to ignore them but it is my experience you should never prejudge people.

Sounds reasonable to me. The point I was trying to make earlier is that our three freshmen guards are good enough to be part of the rotation at some level, and it may be to a greater degree than most people think.

I really like this group of guards. I don't believe any of them will redshirt, as some were suggesting when Hornbeak and Hield were signed. LK appears to have signed three legitimate candidates to compete for playing time this fall.

Are you SERIOUS?!?!? LOL... Don't tell anybody, but I grew up in Udall...

But, when I was there we didn't have anyone THAT athletic. lol... evidenced by the fact that even I was able to play football, basketball, and baseball in my time there...

You new to Udall, I assume?

Just guessing here, but I don't think Dewar, OK previously had an athlete like Ronnell Lewis. Ryan Minor was not too bad for a player from a small town. These things do happen.

I know what you mean though, as even I played football, baseball, and even wrestled some at a "big" high school (550+ in my graduation class). Even in high school, no one could possibly mistake me for someone athletic.

:D
