Didnt they let us practice there one of the rare times we made the tournament... Villanova i think, right?

Loved Kelvin, Karen and Kellen as people, but only "liked" kelvin as a coach. JMO, but Kelvin was a great motivator, great defensive coach, and a below average offense coach, while at OU. However, he won and I appreciated that. I hated his offense.
I have watched Houston play a number of times in the last couple years and I think his offensive approach has really grown and improved due to his time in the NBA. I think it would do Moser good to spend some time in the NBA. I think Moser is a pretty good coach for about 35 minutes of a game. Unfortunately for us, the game is 40 minutes long.

That about sums up my thoughts on Moser. I dont always like his rotations but I say that about most coaches. There is almost no one I wouldnt rather have in the last 5 minutes of a close game than Moser.

I watched most of the Texas/NC State game last night. NC State couldn't function against the Texas defense. I couldn't help but compare it to how our offense did against Texas in Austin.

NC State also scored 97 against Texas in the regular season. Every game is different.
If you're being objective, where would you put Kelvin Sampson on the "best active college head coaches" list? Also, if Houston cuts down the nets this year, what spot would you put him at then?
I would probably put Kelvin at #6 right now behind Pitino, Izzo, Self, Calipari and Few (in no particular order). I think Kelvin is a better bench coach than at least half of those guys, especially Calipari...but it's hard to overlook what Coach Cal has accomplished dating back to taking UMass to the Final Four. If Houston wins the Natty, though, I can see an argument for Kelvin to elevate to #3 behind only Pitino and Self.

Cal is better than some people give him credit for but as a pure coach, Kelvin is up there with Pitino, Self, and as much as I hate it, you can’t deny what Hurley has done. I guess you could say Hurley needs to do it for a while longer but he’s already won multiple titles. Izzo obviously has the title that Kevin is lacking. Few is a good comp because he has been great forever and is only missing one thing to complete his resume.
Obviously Kelvin has himself to blame for it, but if he didn’t get in trouble at Indiana, I think he would have at least one title by now. He would have been able to recruit so well there since they were still a blue blood at the time. He basically lost 7-8 years of coaching.

Agree, but would the Kelvin of OU and Indiana be as successful in the portal/NIL era without the hiatus and NBA experience?? He’s a better coach now, and even more “mellow” in allowing more offensive freedom. He even admits he’s a better coach because of it.
Either way, I put him in the top 5 above Few and agree Hurley’s longevity may hold him back on where I would place him.
I thought about Hurley since it's hard to overlook someone who won back-to-back Natties. However, those are his only two tournament appearances (so far) where he has made it past the first weekend. As such, I think guys like Kelvin and Mark Few should be ranked higher...but it's obviously subjective. As an FYI, Kelvin is one win away from his SEVENTH straight Sweet 16 appearance. That's pretty impressive. OU's record is three (1987-1989).

Agreed. Thats why I don’t place Hurley above coaches who have done it longer.
I would have Pitino #1 probably because he’s won NCs at two schools and has turned around what, 4,5, 6 programs?
Kelvin’s only blemish is the lack of a title. He’s tuned 4 programs and multiple FFs.
It was painful to watch his reaction on not getting a shot off to win it all last year. Brutal. Hope he gets it this year.

Mj, if quanas hadn’t gotten hurt i think he would have gotten a championship.
One thing you can’t hardly argue with and that is very few coaches have gotten players to play harder than kelvin.
Where would kelvin rank now? Maybe right behind u conn’s hurley for me. One of the best for sure. Kellen will be just like him I would wager. 3d generation coach if I remember correctly

100% I believe Quannas turning his ankle kept them/him from a Natty. And even with that, I also believe we were Ace McGhee with 3 fouls or a normal Hollis shooting night from advancing. Hollis and Quannas combined for 1 basket and 6 pts, IIRC.
Give the title to Kelvin that year and not only does it elevate Kelvin’s status but also where we are as a program.
Even so, it would still be hard to move him past Pitino, Izzo, and Self even with a title. Without it though, I would have to put him barely behind Hurley but ahead of Few.

This Houston team isn't cutting down the nets. They are still very good, but not as good as last year and they've had their problems against talented teams. Roster just didn't quite gel like it needed, and Sharp/Uzan struggled without a guy like Cryer leading the way. Tugler also didn't take the next step and develop into the Roberts-type player that he was thought to be.
Not trying to be negative, and I'd love nothing more than for Kelvin to get a title, but I don't see this team really being capable. Hope I'm wrong.
