I know it's not his style but LK should have picked up a technical foul tonight.

If nothing else, to fight for his players.

Sometimes, you get a few calls after working them pretty hard.

I had a bad feeling when they made a point to warn our bench because Henson was riding the lead official. It was chicken****, and not much ever changed.

Oh well. Beat Texas.

Intentionally getting a T sometimes works well at home but seldom does you any good on the road.

Henson should have gotten a technical after that. It was BS.

I actually think Lon's demeanor really kills us with the zebras at times. Sometimes, you need to step up for your team & make a point. Tonight would have been one of those nights. The 4th & 5th fouls on Spangler were absurd. And everyone in the building should have seen the shot clock expire. K-State was literally just throwing up wild & crazy shots and forcing the officials to call a foul. And it worked.

I beg to differ. They weren't forcing the officials to call those "fouls"; the officials were more than happy to oblige.

I generally like that Lon doesn't rant and rave the entire game (see e.g. Bob Huggins). However, games like this are where he should spend some of that equity with the officials. His primary post player got his 4th foul when he was literally slung to the floor by an opponent. If there was ever a time to make a point, that was it. Perhaps if he protects his player there the equally absurd 5th foul isn't called the same way.

I love Lon and this is a relatively minor criticism, but I agree. Lon could stand to stand up to the officials more often.

To me it was very telling that the officials didn't review Spangler getting flipped and thrown to the ground. I know that cannot change the call on the court, but you have to protect the players better then that. I am not saying anything more should have been called on KSU player, but as much as they review other contact, why was that not reviewed.

That was very similar to the play with Blake Griffin in the NCAA tournament. I know the foul was called on the flipper, not Blake. I can't remember if they called it flagrant. The play yesterday should have been a foul on the KSU player and it was much more flagrant than the call against Buddy.

If the officials are that intimidated by the home crowd, they need to step back to calling middle school games.

I think this stuff that a coach needs to pick up a T is just silly. We want it as fans because there's nothing we can do. I think that giving the other team 2 points is just not a smart move. If anything, the players needed a lot more composure, not to get fired up. KSU drew a lot of energy from their crowd and it seemed like OU got really frustrated and dejected from the screwing they were getting from the refs. Kruger couldn't control the refs but he could do something to control the players.

Make no mistake, I am absolutely not putting this loss on Kruger. It just seemed like an our players were trying to push an avalanche uphill and I fail to see how giving KSU 2 more points in a close game would have helped things. It would've made us feel better but that's about it.

LK shows amazing restraint - not just Saturday night, but all year. I got about 5 T's from my living room Saturday night. Lattin phantom foul, Spangler's 4th and 5th, shot clock violation, then in the final minute Gipson's two-handed shove on Woodard. And, probably would have gotten one for the foul discrepancy alone. That might be SIX.

I am not sure you get more calls by trying to intimidate officials or you get more by being repsectful. Hard to say. If officials at this level are intimidated, then they don't have any business officiating at this level. And, based on what I say Saturday night, there could be some cause for evaluating their ability to officiate at this level.

In football, there is a review of the officials by the conference after every game, and I think even the coaches can make comments about issues they feel were missed. Is there the same process in basketball?

Yes, everyone is graded out at the D1-NBA level.

I'm not sure that how 'nice' or 'mean' a coach is plays into it at all. I don't think Billy or Kelvin were 'nice' to officials and that didn't seem to make a difference to officials.

You can't really use the Missouri game as an example because Hightower played right into Billy's hands. :ez-laugh:

I believe the value in a purposeful technical (on rare occasions obviously) is to show your players you have their back. If you want them to fight through adversity, you have to fight for them. Not every call but sometimes.

Tubbs just whined all the time, that does no good at all. As seldom as LK gets on officials, I think it would have more impact than you think.

I agree that it might have an impact at home, but I don't think it works on the road. It just serves to get the opponents fans riled up even more. When you are dealing with officials that are scared to offend the home crowd, that's just not going to help.
