Marcus Smart is a hell of a player

Sorry, that's pre-web. Doesn't count.

I'm kidding. Sort of.

Denver, surely you agree that oswho fans have (at least in the internet era) been much more vocal in touting their fan support than OU ever has. It was a point of pride for them throughout Sutton's tenure and they continued to brag about it until they woke up one day and realized that, with Eddie Sutton gone, their crowds weren't anything to brag about.

I don't know where you guys have seen OSU fans "touting our fan support", but it's been a LONG time since I've seen any of that.

In fact, there are often threads on OP.com lamenting the level of fan support in basketball and how to "get it back" and so forth.

I have an excellent memory.

And it hasn't been all that long.

And I doubt a Sooner fan ever touted OU's fan support on an oswho board (and if one did, I'm sure he or she was immediately banned).

Come on, Jeff, you have been around long enough to know that OSU fans used to brag incessantly about the packed house in GIA. I'm not talking about you, but there is no way you have forgotten the Poke fans who came here to rub it in when OU couldn't fill seats in the LNC. It stopped when the empty seats were all too obvious at OSU games.

Skyvue is right, it hasn't been THAT long. OUHoops.com is still a relatively new web site. He's also right about the quick trigger OU fans experienced on OSU boards at even the slightest hint of "stepping out of line" in the eyes of the moderators over there.

Nobody will support a losing team for very long, nobody.

But who supports their team the best when the team is winning is also an indicator of who's fans are more supportive. When OSU is playing good basketball, it's the rowdiest arena in the country. When they are not playing good basketball it's not close.

You'll have to tell me, cause I don't know, how ou supports their basketball teams when winning. Was it packed to the rafters every game and was it too the rowdiest arena in the country?

While OU fans had nothing to be ashamed of during the banner years, support for the basketball team has never been on a level the football program has enjoyed. The house was generally packed for the big games. But there were far too many empty seats when the cup cakes on our schedule came to town.

The bragging OSU fans used to do here might have been justified, but it was still in poor taste on an OU board. Thus, it's easy to see why Sooner fans do not hesitate to point to the clearly visible empty seats OSU has been experiencing lately.

And, for the record, OU fans never at any time bragged about attendance, even after games when every seat was filled. We were grateful and said as much. But the only bragging back then was done by the few Poke fans who assumed their packed out arena would go on forever.

As oswho fans have pointed out repeatedly on this board in the past couple of years, things haven't been all that bad for oswho in recent seasons. They've made it to postseason play in all but one year since Eddie Sutton resigned, I believe. But the attendance drop-off occurred during Sean's tenure and has continued under Ford.

So please don't make excuses. The fact is, oswho's "basketball tradition" is limited to two coaches in their history, and their support for the program is similarly limited.

And as far as proclaiming your crowd the rowdiest in the country -- you must have done quite a bit of traveling to come to that conclusion. Did you manage to attend several games (because one game isn't a sufficient sampling) at every arena in the country? If so, my hat's off to you for the thoroughness of your research. How long did that take you?

CBS Sports gave GIA that label.

Mostly likely it was one writer or commentator for CBS Sports.

I just did a quick Google search and found several such stories and rankings. One or two mentioned GIA, others didn't.

I hardly think it's an accepted fact that GIA is the country's rowdiest. But claiming that it is the rowdiest is typical oswho fan behavior. The poor aggs are so desperate for acceptance and respect that they take one story or comment and thereafter quote it as if it had been written in stone.

I wonder when oswho last held the longest home winning streak in the nation. I can say that OU had it during Sampson's tenure (meaning, a few years ago, bot not that long ago). That might be one way to adjudge a home crowd and arena, too, might it not? But I wonder when was the last time an OU fan cited that fact on an oswho board?

Probably never.

That was almost 12 years ago. I doubted it back then. Things have changed...a lot.

I have always said, when both are at capacity and over whatever period of time you want to use (10, 15, 20, 25 years), GIA is tougher to play in and LNC is tougher to win in. GIA is louder bc it was constructed to more effectively keep crowd noise in than LNC was and has a +1500 capacity. Also, over the years, OU has had better teams more often than OState, which is the #1 factor in home court advantage.

The 2 schools support and home court advantage are essentially the same. Neither school has ever been close to really having 'basketball school' support. Only one has ever claimed to.

Pretty sure during that stretch of 10 years or so when OU and OSU were both pretty good, OU's home record was better. Take that for what it's worth.

At one point, OU held the Big 8 record (56 under Tubbs) and the Big 12 record (37 under Sampson) for home winning streaks.

CBS Sports did say that GIA was the "Rowdiest Arena in the Country." I'm sure there were a number of other schools that did not agree with their claim.

Oddly enough, it came in Eddie Sutton's last season. And, as we all know, things have not been the same since he left. Will the subject of this thread, Marcus Smart, and his teammates change that? They looked good against N. C. State, which brings up another question. Will Travis be able to get the most out of what appears to be a talented group of young players?

I won't argue that when OSU fans are at their loudest, GIA is a tough place to play. However, they will never duplicate the homecourt feat OU had in the '80s. In 7+ seasons from '83 - '90, OU lost TWO home games...TWO! During that time, Dick Vitale nicknamed Billy Tubbs "The Judge" because he ruled on his home court. We were so good at home that Coach K decided to challenge his Duke team with Christian Laettner, Grant Hill and Bobby Hurley to win one in Norman (I forgot the outcome of that one ;) ).

OU fans can be LOUD when they want to be, it just doesn't happen often enough. When they are loud, the games turn out memorable such as this game --> "The referees have asked me to tell you that regardless of how terrible the officiating is <crowd erupts>, don't throw anything on the court." Or this one --> "Abercrombie for three....YES!"

His line tonight

20 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals, 4 blocks

That is impressive to say the least. I have to admit he is one of the best fr guards I've seen in the big 12 in a few years. He has a bright future.

Oh course there were. Kansas and Duke to name two can certainly disagree and make their own claims. And I know all three of those schools wouldn't trade their own arena for any in the country.

Just like you guys. I'm sure you wouldn't trade your arena for anyone elses in the country either, right?

OSU wouldn't trade GIA for Amway Arena? That's dumb.

Once we get our $55 million dollar (or more) update/renovation/upgrade/improvement/expansion/reconfigurent, I wouldn't. It is coming, right Joe? Joe?

In the late 80's LN was named the toughest place in America to play after OU knocked off back to back #1's.
Just FYI...
