If Matt Freeman can't practice until classes begin on January 19th, OU will have already played 6 B12 games including both ISU games. That's all before he laces up his sneakers for a practice.... although he will have a week or so to watch practice with a GA, and work on conditioning. I can't imagine a kid so good, that he would get in shape, learn the system, and convincingly beat out several other post players for time.
He may be a great shooter, but he has to play defense and rebound with some good athletes, too. I just can't imagine an early HS enrollee from New Zealand ready to compete at a high D1 level. He has to beat out 3 of the 4 players in front of him (Lattin, Manyang, McNeace, and Buford) by a lot to make it even a consideration. Guys like Lattin, Buford and McNeace are really athletic and have played in the system for 2 years and have put in 100's of hours of practice with the team.
Matt's not going to pick up all the nuances of Kruger's system in a couple of weeks of practice. It's just not that easy. They have to play and switch without thinking about it. Their play has to flow naturally because of many hours of practice. He can't hesitate. For example, he has to know how to run through an offensive set when the other team changes defenses. I'm not even sure a Top 10 talent like Marques Bolden could contribute anything with only a couple of weeks of practice.
I'm not knocking Matt, but I doubt his competition has been on the level of 4A-5A HS Oklahoma teams. He's going to be taking a huge step up. Now next season is a possibility. He will practice all 2nd semester, and have all summer to get comfortable with OU's system and athletes. Even then, he will get some stiff competition for playing time. JMHO.
Honestly, I don't know how much Matt will even participate in some of the drills. They can't stop and explain every little thing to him and slow down the rest of the team. A lot of their drills now are fine-tuning their responsibilities. They can't have someone clueless mucking up their drills. I bet he does a lot of watching and listening. For example, I don't think Stoops and Riley will be slowing down practices for the Orange Bowl this week to explain subtle things to Kyler Murray.... even if he were there.
I just want our expectations for Matt this semester to be reasonable.
