MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

Losing Cooper would be bother me a ton more than it would some of you. To the extent we are allegedly priced out of the top portal guys, we sure as heck can’t afford to lose highly rated high school kids after one year. If that happens, and it is due to how poorly his playing time was managed, it would be a big blow. Yes, there are lots of 2s/3s in the portal, but (a) how many of the good ones can we realistically get, and (b) how many come with three remaining years of eligibility? For a coach who preaches about his desire to build around roster stability, it would be yet another hit.

In order, I’d prefer it be Yaya, Luke, or (I guess) Cole. Unless it is Porter. 🤣

I try not to read too much into social media stuff but Cooper seemed to be pretty active in adding our targets/visitors with follows, etc.

That all basically stopped on IG after the Godfrey visit and he hasn’t followed Jones or Goodine. He also shared his ex-teammate’s portal entry post from Austin Peay with the caption “yup”, which could be looked at as nothing, or something either in a positive or negative way.

I’d like to be way off here, but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t noticed it already.

Cooper is really good in pregame layup/dunk line, but other than that, it’s looked really bad.

Moser shackled guys like Marvin Johnson, Bamisile and Rivaldo for too long, but Cooper simply isn’t good at basketball.

Damn.

So which one of the below are we okay with and devastated with?

Kaden Cooper (maybe, but likes SB said, lots of guards there)
Jacolb Cole (interested in his potential play)
Luke Northweather (meh, but would like to see him develop)
Sam Godwin (this would be devastating given our roster currently)
Yaya Keita (nah)
In order of devestation:
1) Godwin
2) Cooper
3) Cole
4) Norweather
5) Yaya

I like Cooper more than Godwin, but I don't think OU can get 2 contributors at the 5 spot. You'd have to get a legit 30 minute guy at the 5, which is doubtful.

I think that’s a bit harsh, but it was clear PM didn’t think he was good enough to see the court last year. So whatever.

But, we have to keep these guys around a bit longer than one year, IMO.

You'd like to give guys a chance to develop, I agree, but it's 2024. That isn't a thing anymore.

The teams that have done well are still returning production year over year. Granted Cooper doesn’t fit in that. But I don’t think turning over 6 seniors year over year is going to be the answer either. But to be clear, there don’t seem to be many good ones at this point.

Losing Cooper = losing year 3/4....or in other words, seeing his (hopefully) full college potential manifested at OU.

Moser is entering the season on a very hot seat and you need impact players now. It's very much one-year focused at the moment.

What's everyone's best guess on Cooper's stats next year?

I don't see him beating out Goodine or Jones or Elvis for a starting spot (or if any other 2/3 is added).

....so maybe 5-7 ish ppg max?

Looking solely at just next year, even for OU (and their portal struggles), it shouldn't be hard to find someone who can provide what Cooper probably will/would or even more.

It would suck, yes, but what if he stays on the roster, produces minimally next year, OU struggles for wins, Moser gets fired, and Cooper bolts anyway? It could benefit OU and Cooper himself. He goes somewhere and gets time/developed, OU gets older and finds someone that is more ready now.

Just hypothesizing, lol, or finding the silver lining....IF it's Cooper.

I think he could be better than Goodine.

I think the annoying part about this if it actually happens is that it would seem to be about running from competition. If it was about the coaching or the way he’s been handled to this point he would’ve entered the portal a lot earlier in the process. And if it is about having some competition for PT, I don’t get how you wouldn’t already expect the staff to be recruiting other kids at the 2/3 spots. I hope it isn’t Cooper because I think he’s got tremendous potential but I’d just be curious about the thought process.

Tells you all you need to know if he can't beat out Goodine or Elvis.

Better for him to bolt before he has a lackluster year than wait until after next year when more tape is out

Yea because it is so much cooler to bash a kid like Cooper who was never given a chance by saying he is a terrible player.
never given a chance? Lol he has a scholarship and has been here one year...do you expect a starting spot to be given to him regardless of performance?
