Agree. Need a reliable star to carry the team. Last year had great role players but needed a go to guy in clutch moments. This, to me, has been Porter's biggest issue: we had a solid team last year with no star. Maybe he thought that was Uzan? Have to close on a big name at point.
I think there is some partial truth in this somewhere. But I think we were more of an athletic center away from being a top 30-35 team.Agree. Need a reliable star to carry the team. Last year had great role players but needed a go to guy in clutch moments.
This means Richmond is a lock, right?
My assumption is JIC doesn't feel like he is 2nd fiddle to anyone and is no one's "back-up" plan so he moved on from OU. Even if OU doesn't get Richmond, there are still a lot of solid choices (guards and bigs) in the portal. Maybe OU then offers more to a more productive big but doesn't want to do that until they are officially out on Richmond? It actually helps OU more if he is going to choose SJU that he does it in the next day so they can move on as well. IF you have a legit shot at a top 3ish player in the portal though, you obviously are going to wait it out.Or… we re left holding our..
Staying positive still other guys out there and we clearly have some NIL right now.
I think they thought hugley was going to be the starter and play over 20 minutes a game. He averaged double figures in acc before getting hurt. Obviously hugely was not in the best physical shape and you could see him asking out on many occasions.I think there is some partial truth in this somewhere. But I think we were more of an athletic center away from being a top 30-35 team.
Hypothetical, we recruit Garrison to OU, instead of his dream farm town. He comes in, defends bigs, provides solid rotation minutes, pushes Godwin to the bench where he is a best fit. We win more games, beat Houston with rebounding there. UCF is no trouble. Add 2-3 more wins, all without a star. That is a tournament team. JM and Uzan stay for the next year, we don't have to portal so hard, and make a 2nd run at it.
Uzan buys into it bc we are a tournament team and doesn't sell his soul for Vegas odds. Winning more games changes attitudes, that is for sure. I bet we at least keep Javian if we make the tourney.
Ah, but all a pipe dream at this point. I suppose, the flip side, it just as easily could have been a cluster with offensive hurdles with a freshman in the PnR game and our lack of backside movement causing clogged up lanes.
That was more my line of thinking as well. Throw some money at a big like Achor Achor and then whatever else at another serviceable guard and call it a day.Might be in the minority here, but if we don’t get Richmond I don’t want to throw all the NIL we have at Onyenso… while he is definitely talented, in my opinion his stats don’t warrant Richardson type money. Go throw that money at a Jaxson Robinson or a dude that can get buckets. Maybe even just go get a playable guard and big like Achor Achor, but I don’t even know at this point, lol.
Agreed, hope they've thrown out feelers to Robinson and Achor to let them know that a potential bag could head their way.Might be in the minority here, but if we don’t get Richmond I don’t want to throw all the NIL we have at Onyenso… while he is definitely talented, in my opinion his stats don’t warrant Richardson type money. To me that roster as currently structured does not fit Richmond at all. OU has the shooting to be a more attractive fit imo.FWIW, I asked CJ Moore (a really good college hoops writer for The Athletic) how he thinks the Smith knows impacts SJU with Richmond. He replied that he doesn't think it helps them because both players are pretty ball dominant. Let's hope Richmond sees it that way, and that if we can match/come close on the $$, it gives us the edge we need.
Obviously, this is your opinion, but did you form this opinion after watching clips of both or off of stats alone? Are you talking about as a true PG? Just trying to gauge how much you know about each player.Smith is significantly better than Miles and is absolutely a true point guard.
I'm not saying you're wrong necessarily but the "significantly" comment caught my eye.Smith is significantly better than Miles and is absolutely a true point guard. Maybe Richmond is fine with that and would be willing to share the point with another guy who wants the ball in his hands a lot. But, I could see this helping us. Usually, when teams have two good point guards, there is one who is clearly the lead guard and the other assumes ball handling duties when the other is off the floor. With Richmond and Smith, would there be a clear pecking order?
The rankings aren't even close. Smith is considered a top 20 portal player and Miles doesn't even crack the top 150 on some credible lists. Is it possible every expert is wrong? Sure. People didn't expect Soares and Moore to be better than JM (raising my hand here). But when you consider the consensus rankings and the huge difference in level of competition, I don't think this is a particularly controversial opinion.Obviously, this is your opinion, but did you form this opinion after watching clips of both or off of stats alone? Fair, here's to hoping all of them are wrong again ala Soares and MooreThe rankings aren't even close.
