MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

My own personal opinion with the guys we are bringing in with the athleticism aspect...we may not be quite as athletic next year overall....but our shooting ability increases a lot. I believe solid 3 point shooting is a great equalizer. I'd rather have a slightly less athletic group with multiple shooters than a more athletic group with mediocre shooters. Just my own preference.

If the athleticism is reasonably close, I agree. But if it’s a huge step down, it could be a repeat of two seasons ago. It’s just so hard to win in leagues like the Big 12 and SEC if you are at a significant disadvantage athletically every night. That’s what we saw two years ago.

To be fair, the team two years ago was both unathletic and unable to shoot well. Goodine, Elvis, and Miles may be 3 of the top 4 shooters Moser has had at OU along with Gibson. That’s been one of my biggest gripes with his time here, we have not had shooters at all.

This team, while less athletic than year 3, should also be vastly more athletic than year 2 with a better group of shooters to boot. Not saying I think this will be Moser’s best team here - it’s prove it or lose it this year - but it’s the best I’ve felt about our offense going into a season which has been the problem the entire time.

It didn’t feel this way, but that team actually was an above average 3-pt shooting team. I think we ranked in the top half of the Big 12 when the season was over. I suspect that’s somewhat misleading because Grant shot so well early that season, but it wasn’t a weakness of the team. We just were so badly outmanned from a talent standpoint.

I really hope the new guys can match their career numbers. Whether they can against much better competition than they are used to is definitely the question.

The numbers seem to say that, but I think where those numbers are coming from tells a story. Grant and Uzan both shot 40%. The only other good shooters were Jacob Groves (surprisingly) and Bijan (who shot less than 1 a game). That means our best shooters were our primary ball handlers.

Thats fine and all except that it put a lot of pressure on the ball handlers to create their own shots and that is much more difficult in the Big 12. Our wings were mostly horrible shooters which led to horrible spacing as the defenses could pack the paint. Hill (29.1%), Noland (23.6%), Oweh (25.0%), and Bamisile (25.0%) offered us nothing from beyond the arc. Even Tanner Groves (28.6%) who was known to be a floor spacer shot horribly from 3 that season.

Guys like Goodine, Jones, Elvis, and even Nwankwo if he does indeed commit would offer us so much more in that area and hopefully give our ball handlers and bigs a lot more space in the PnR which in turn would make the offense run in a much smoother fashion. That’s what I’m seeing as far as this team build goes anyways.

Wague is more athletic than Godwin, Hugely and Northweather. Not sure anyone can watch his film and argue otherwise. I'm not saying he'll be a bigtime player for us, but he's the most athletic 5 we've had since Kur Kuath. Also of note, he was pretty buried last season at Alabama behind Grant Nelson (37 mpg) who may get drafted and Nick Pringle (18pmg), Jarin Stevenson (16 mpg) & Sam Walters (12 mpg). That's 4 guys 6'10" or taller. We had 2 Godwin and Northweather. Hugely was not 6'10" as he was listed. Again not saying he's going to come in and be a stud, just some added context.
He”s no good. He averaged 10 and 8 minutes a game the last two years. And he’s not more athletic than Godwin. He’s bigger, but that’s about it,

I heard the donors offered $1M for every tournament appearance under Moser. Haven’t had to open their checkbooks yet!

Lighten up, those of you already drafting your replies! It’s a joke.

If you were to sign him, him, Jones, and Moore would rotate for minutes much like Oweh, Moore, and Soares did.

Yeah. I had the positive vibes in the morning yesterday. But that player.............isn't one I'm a huge fan of.

Just putting our shooting numbers here compared to the Big12 the last 3 years (conf play only)

- We shot 32% in 2022, which was 5th of 10.
- We shot 32% in 2023, which was 8th of 10.
- We shot 33.6% in 2024, which was 7th of 14.

Some other fun numbers?
- We were 9th of 10 in TO% in 2022
- We were 10th of 10 in OE, TO%, OR%, and FTR in 2023
- We were 11th of 14 in OR% in 2024 (not our worst stats to see from the 3 years)

Should have looked deeper.

The UIW coach was an assistant at DePaul when Elvis played there.

I don't think the follow ends up becoming much but it's still interesting....familiarity + unannounced signing + new follow.

Interesting indeed. If there’s something to this…

I prefer to use Elvis’ scholarship on another big, because I think Forsythe can produce similar numbers to Elvis.

Interesting thought, I don't know how good Forsythe could/will be. (I did predict a Bob Cousy resurrection...stay tuned)

But I wanted to look at some similarly minded ideas here.

I brought out Keiton Page's first year, true fresh v. Kobe Elvis's last year.

I don't think that is unreasonable to expect? That would slot him in at the 8th or 9th roster role score wise. (Assuming he plays that well and Cole isn't better with all scoring staying consistent, which will not happen)

Edit: I had to use PER from his SO year, bc it didn't exist the year prior

To add onto this, from an optimistic standpoint? (Maybe the pessimistic version for @StoopsBros lol)

Kobe is following the following on IG:

-Jacolb Cole
-Sam Godwin
-Tad Gilbert
-Jalon Moore
-Brycen Goodine
-Jadon Jones
-Jake Moser
-Reid Lovelace
-Duke Miles
-Kaden Cooper (oops)
-Dylan Mihalke

Anybody have the new Joe Tipton update in Ugonna?

"I’m also told that Oklahoma and Mississippi State are two additional programs that would love to add him, but from what I have gathered, Louisville and UNC have stronger chances of landing him.

With all that being said, I’m currently giving the edge to North Carolina.

Onyenso could also still leave his name in the Draft, and if there is one thing that I have learned this transfer portal season — recruitments can change quickly."

Could we take him and switch Yaya or Northweather to NIL walk on status?
