McGusty Transferring

I guarantee that if you tracked his hockey assists that McGusty would also have an incredibly low number for a wing player.

lol

Lack of assists from a SG doesn't necessarily mean he is a ball hog, or wasn't passing the ball. It just means he wasn't CREATING baskets for teammates. And that really isn't his game, so it doesn't surprise me. McGusty's shots per minute played isn't all that different than James. And on the season, James averaged about 1 more assist per game than McGusty. One. While playing 12 more minutes per game. You guys are reaching here.

I love this board - where half the posters aren’t even watching the games and will still argue both sides till the end.

So now I don't watch the games? Because I see things differently than you?

Odd.

I wish the tracked hockey assists, or make it available

I also wished they’d change the rule so you could get an assist if the shooter was fouled on a layup

Dude should go to Houston. Kelvin will turn him into an All-Conference player by his senior year if he'll work.

I think you could make this statement about a lot of coaches/players "if he'll work". Coaches call it "buying in" all the time but a lot of guys aren't willing to do the things that would/could make them that type of player.

Exactly. If he'd worked at OU, there'd be no need for him to transfer.

Maybe I should have added that I think Kelvin (and other coaches) would also put him in a position to succeed.

I don't think Lon and his offense did that.

I’ll give McGusty the benefit of the doubt. I know he suffered with the loss of a good friend. Maybe that knocked him off his workouts, and then, as vbdad said, he got into a funk by not starting in Australia last summer. That got him sideways with the coaching staff. Combine that with a lack of defensive intensity. Sometimes it gets to a place where change is just good for both parties.

I wish him good luck at whatever school he chooses. Also, him transferring didn’t bother me in the least. I think it was for the best.

I didn't realize that. My daughter lost 2 friends in her sophomore year of high school. She kept her grades up but she just marked time until high school was over. It took her a couple of years to get back to close to her normal self.

This could possibly be closer to the Truth. Lon's offense definitely seems to be more designed for players that can create on their own with a few moments of motion/movement mixed in. McGusty orginally looked like he would fit that bill but this year didn't seem to have the type of ball handling needed to really create for himself (something he could put the work in on). In the end, it looked like both parties were ready to move on. We'll see how he does somewhere else. Will he accept being challenged from another coach? Millions of players have transfered for a "fresh start" just to find out that they still have to put in the work to succeed in their new location. Here's to hoping KM finds what he's looking for.

i wont miss him. but i will be interested in seeing where he ends up and i will probably look up his stats after his eligibility runs for curiosity. but he will not be missed by OU imo. good luck to the kid. i hope he gets it all figured out

McGusty has to buy in defensively or he won't see the court with Kelvin. Kelvin could give 0 cares how good you are offensively if you don't play defense, and McGusty never bought in defensively, hence why he's leaving.

If McGusty buys in, yeah, he can be good, and maybe leaving OU is what will kick his ass into gear, but he's in for a rude awakening if he goes to Houston with the same mindset he had here. He'll need to grad transfer if he wants to see the court at Houston with the same mentality he had here.

Tired of hearing that in regards to OU players. NOBODY bought in this year. None of them. You could make a small argument that Odomes did, but he wasn't nearly as good as some have made him out to be. So I'm not going to single out McGusty when the entire team acted like they were allergic to defense.

The coaching staff needs to buy in defensively. Until they do you can't expect the players or just magically do it. The whole team was awful defensively.

Word on the mean streets of Katy, TX from former HS teammates is it will be UH....

He'll have to sit out a year, right?

I don't follow them closely enough, but I've been curious who they are after to replace Gray next year. I think that is by far their biggest loss.

Houston makes sense. I bet he will work on his game especially defense in his transfer year. Guys usually realize they have to put in the work after they have transferred.

As for LK didn't put him position to score is ludicrous. Has anybody watched our offense over the years. He certainly put Buddy in position to score who wasn't a great dribbler.

It was true that most of the team didn't buy into defense this year and LK has taken the blame for it with the team and vowed to them it will be different next year. Although personally I don't think our guys are athletic enough to be great defenders outside of Jamuni. However defense is mostly effort so it can be at least good.
