McNease

Interesting tweet from Derek Peterson a few minutes ago:

"Well heck, if Jamuni McNeace keeps playing like he did today he might end up starting."

Nice to see him having days that could make someone think this even if it doesn't end up happening.

That's great news, I think Jamuni has a lot to offer the next 3 years even if he never starts.

I don't pretend to be a particularly good judge of basketball talent, but I've been on the McNeace bandwagon for a couple of years. He impressed me very much when I got to attend a practice in 2014. I'd love to see him come into his own.

it may not be a popular opinion but it isn't facepalm worthy. I saw flashes of mcnease last year. He could end up being a monster here. Just needs to slow down and get experience. I've a fan of lattin but think he is a bit overrated.

While I agree it isn't face-palm worthy, I don't understand why you need to put down Lattin to make your point. How is he overrated? He wasn't even a top-100 player coming out of high school. I view both of these guys as typical Lon Kruger players who exceeded their high school ranking.

As for over/under 10 minutes, I'll make my pre-conference prediction of OVER. I think Lon will give him every opportunity to help with the interior defense and be a solid rim protector. However, if he doesn't make anything beyond modest improvement from his freshman year, he'll be UNDER those 10 minutes come conference time.

Nice to see Jamuni finally getting some love. I predicted he would make a meaningful contribution last year, but had to admit how wrong I was when he didn't see much action. He has the size and athleticism to really help us if the light comes on. I would like to see him play with more toughness and a killer instinct than he has shown so far.

I didn't mean to put down Lattin. It just seems like fans think he is a superstar. I think he is a good player

Jamuni needs to develop ~4' Jump hooks with both hands. He should be able to provide interior defensive similar to Lattin. He has the athleticism... it takes experience and desire.

Defensively it could be argued he is a superstar. He averaged 2 blocks a game last year and is already 5th all time in program history in that category.

Khadeem was also voted to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team by league coaches last season as a sophomore.

From my limited view of practice so far, Jamuni shows the desire to get better. He battles hard with Khadeem and the other post players. He is better than he was last season. He works hard at practice. He has high level athleticism for a big man, and is just a sophomore. As a freshman last season he played in 27 of 37 games, and averaged almost 8 minutes in those 27 games (207 total minutes).

In the NCAA Tournament games, Jamuni played the following minutes:

12 minutes vs. Villanova (4 points; 0 rebounds; 1 blocked shot)
11 minutes vs. Oregon (0 points; 3 rebounds; 1 blocked shot)
14 minutes vs. Texas A&M (2 points; 1 rebound; 2 blocked shots)
12 minutes vs. VCU (1 point; 1 rebound)
_2 minutes vs. CSU Bakersfield (Manyang played 14 minutes)

Without question, Jamuni needs more game experience and he needs to develop his offensive game to contribute more when he is in the game. Based on coaches comments at Tip-In Club functions over the past two years, it is clear that the coaches believe that Jamuni has the capacity to develop into a special player by the time he is an upperclassman. The coaches have a plan to get Jamuni there, and my guess is that the plan includes playing Jamuni at least 10 minutes a game as a sophomore.

Note: Khadeem also looks to be improved. He seems to have taken on some leadership qualities now that he is a junior. He is certainly “vocal” at practice, in a good way.

I can’t wait for November 8 and the exhibition game vs. Washburn. Only 19 days away! This team should give us an interesting journey this season. Lots of talent on the court, tempered by lots of inexperience. There will likely be a slow start with early adversity, but it will be fun to watch this team grow and improve during the season.

Khadeem improved a ton from freshman to sophomore years, but he still has miles to go. He's a good defender when he stays out of foul trouble, but he still has huge issues in that department. He has no offensive moves whatsoever. He's not much of a defensive rebounder.

If he can play smarter, and develop some sort of offensive game aside from lobs and putbacks, he could have a long future in the NBA. He has the athletic talent, and he's already an elite rim protector.

McNease is in the same boat, and I think he has a much higher offensive ceiling. But he's even further away from where he needs to get.

Defensively, I think he's pretty close to a superstar. His ability to control the paint and block shots makes our defense lots better. He probably has a chance to be the defensive player of the year in the conference. If he really is developing into a 12 PPG scorer, he could challenge for 1st team all conference.

In my view, those who downplay Lattin are too focused on what he does on the offensive end, probably because it's hard to gauge how effective he is defensively when he's not blocking shots. Keeping people from penetrating is difficult to see but it counts. If he stays out of foul trouble, becomes a consistent rebounder and scorer, and he's a definite superstar.

Lattin's reaction and quickness off of his feet are special. McNease should be able to develop some good defensive skills with hard work.

Likewise, I think people that upplay Lattin are too focused on his blocked shots.
I think he got bullied way too much down low. pushed around. That should be better this year with being more experienced and hopefully a little heavier.

I think we know players get better, some way better. I think Lattin has a NBA future and will be a force this season, and if McNease wants to catch up to him I certainly won't complain.

Just an update....but I think we are starting to see how comparable mcnease and lattin are.

Per 40 Jamuni (actual 15 min per game)
10ppg
13 rpg
55% FG
4 bpg

Per 40 Lattin (actual 24 min per game)
16 ppg
10 rpg
55% FG
3.6 bpg

Good Analysis
I would have put Lattin back in the last couple of mins. against Memphis
