Michelle Voepel - Top Candidates to Replace Sherri Coale

JMHO but I am hopeful that Voepel is off base with her selection of Harris, Jackson-Durrett or Brown as potential candidates. I think OU needs a proven head coach at this juncture of the program (32-52 the last 3 years). They can ill afford to go with a unproven assistant and fail.

My sentiment exactly.

I have reason to believe Harris or Dionnah would be able to recruit, probably keep Darianna Littlepage-Buggs in Oklahoma, and get the team to play defense, that would be a step in the right direction, Brown and Clark-Heard would be question marks for me... Langley wouldn’t be a bad option, but she from Alabama and I think she could land at Auburn...

OU has a history of hiring assistant coaches for head assistant coaching positions. Not 100%.

Well there was Capel and Kruger. Football it is all assistants in the modern era except for Howard. Sherri was not an assistant.

No, she was not an assistant but do you think a high school head coach would be better. I think Dionnah Jackson-Durrett has learned from one of the best over the past half a decade. She can definitely recruit - for that part she is absolutely a proven commodity.

Langley could easily look at Auburn as a much more difficult to succeed job than is OU with far less tradition. The SEC has Texas A&M with Gary Blair as coach, South Carolina with Dawn Staley, Tennessee with Kelly Harper, Georgia with Joni Taylor, Kentucky with Kyra Elzy and Arkansas with Mike Neighbors might be a far more difficult league to contend for championships.

The Big 12 has Baylor with Kim Mulkey and Texas was Vic Schaefer and that is really the list with perhaps West Virginia with Bett Shelby and OSU with Jim Littell. Contending for the championship in the Big 12 should be far less difficult.

I'm confident Joe C will get this right regardless of whether he chooses a proven head coach or an up-and-coming assistant. Not everyone remembers how Sherri Coale got the job in the first place. I think Donnie Duncan was still the AD, but in title only. Steve Owens was running the show at that time. He was out to prove that there were qualified candidates for head coach openings right in the state of Oklahoma. He was openly bothered by the "perception" of coaches from within the state. As such he hired both Sherri Coale and John Blake to try to prove his point. Needless to say, he went one-for-two.

I thought it was Marita Hines who was basically running the women sports that was the mover in the hiring of Sherri Coale.

I tend to shy away from coaching prospects with OU ties. Too much emotion involved which often mitigates the pragmatic thought process and lets the heart not the mind influence the decision too much.

I don't exclude them but they definitely don't start at the top of my list. JMHO.

Like Bo but he is to old. Need younger, someone better able to relate to kids now.
