Michelle Voepel - Top Candidates to Replace Sherri Coale

Yeah, I like Harris too, but I still like Langley a lot also. I'd be fine with either of the two -- Dionnah doesn't check a whole lot of boxes.

We need a PROVEN head coach.

If you want a PROVEN head coach you have eliminated Harris. Of the names you mentioned only Langley qualifies. I too want a proven head coach and presently Langley is at the top of my list assuming Jeff Walz is not available.

I wouldn’t mind either, Langley gets a pass on recruiting for me at the moment because I wouldn’t expect her to set the world on fire recruiting at Rice, but she did coach under Brenda Frese, who always recruits aggressively and always has talent... But being from Alabama, and coaching at UGA, I could see her landing at Auburn.

I just hope we hire someone who will play the girls who are most athletic.

If you are watching the tournament games that is the main characteristic that seems to relate to winning enough to get into the field and to advance.

Sherry tended to evaluate on other things.

I agree! Considering how much SC was able to do with the little talent she brought in year after year, one can only imagine how successful our program would have become had she recruited aggressively and not been biased. When she recruited, admittingly, she said that she looks at more than just their abilities and focuses a lot on values. While I understand you don't want to recruit a troublemaker I also think that sometimes got in the way of her pursuing and signing top talent, and further down the line when the program was already in decline it was far too late. Unless we bring in a superstar coach I can imagine it may take another 4 years before we are successful again.

Exactly, when has OU hired a coach with an head coaching experience in women's basketball. I guess being head coach at Norman fits the bill. As much as I distained the last 8 years under Sherri because of a lack of effort recruiting, she was absolutely outstanding to start with. Those assistant coaches at Texas have been through the battles and can recruit. Johnnie Harris was with Blair at A&M when he won the title, and both Harris and Jackson-Durrett have been to the Final Four multiple times from a losing team at Miss State with Vic Schaefer, and now they are still playing in the Sweet Sixteen.

The longer this goes, the more likely it is one of those two.

I watched the Texas game, it was pretty entertaining. Although I do believe Maryland choked and had they played to their ability should have won easily. It would have been a better match up against South Carolina had Maryland won, I don't see Texas presenting much of a challenge to them.

I can't wait to see Connecticut versus Baylor tonight, I'm hoping UConn wins BIG.

Ditto!

How about Michel Neal at Norman High. His teams have one loss in the last three years with two state Championships. And last years tourney as canceled.

Neal has been a great high school coach. He has done nothing at the college level much less the Power 5 level. Hiring Neal would have an extremely high risk factor. And OU can ill afford to miss on the next hire after experiencing a decline decade under Sherri. Success with the new coach is almost imperative for the future of the program.

I wonder if the new coach would be interested in hiring Neal as an assistant.

Who knows. But I think it would be doubtful unless the new coach has previous connections with OU and possibly Neal. Most coaches want to bring in their own people many/most with whom they have previously had a working relationship.
