BROKEN ARROW — Muskogee’s Roughers turned to a familiar figure Thursday to lead them into the Class 6A girls state basketball tournament.
Senior forward Aaliyah Wilson had 23 points, 11 rebounds and four steals, helping the No. 2 Roughers punch their ticket with a 67-51 win over No. 4 Sapulpa before about 1,500 spectators in the Broken Arrow gym.
“My hat’s off to Aaliyah, she was a horse tonight,” Roughers coach Doyle Rowland said. “I just told the big girl to take us home when we got close to the fourth quarter. She just put us on her back and we rode her all the way in.”
Wilson scored 15 points after halftime, Jada Ford had 18 of her 20 and the Roughers dominated the boards, turning a potential nail-biter into a runaway and Muskogee’s seventh straight win over the Chieftains.
“Beating them that many times, we knew we came in with a target on our backs,” Wilson said. “For us to come out and play as hard as we did, it’s a great feeling and of course it’s a blessing to be able to beat them and go to state.”
The Roughers led 42-40 after three quarters and Wilson made a signature play to ignite a burst starting the fourth. She snatched a lazy pass and raced to the other end for a layup. Next, Trena Mims fed Zomaree McNac for a layup and it was a six-point lead.
Ford’s second 3-pointer made it 49-42, and after Bailey Mader scored for the Chieftains, the Roughers ran off eight straight points and led 57-44.
Chelsea Dungee scored 27 to pace the Chieftains (22-4), one shy of the Preston transfer’s high in her 1½ seasons at the 6A level. Sapulpa can still qualify for the state tournament with a win over No. 7 Midwest City at 3 p.m. Saturday at Catoosa.
Muskogee had to settle for a silver ball in last year’s state tournament when it lost to Broken Arrow in an overtime thriller in the championship game. Wilson said “it’s a great feeling” to be headed back.
“We’ve worked for it, we know what we deserve and we know what we need to do. We just have to keep going and keep building with each game,” she said.
Rowland and the Roughers have ridden Wilson to victory many times. The University of Arkansas signee has more than 1,600 career points and is four shy of 800 career rebounds. Thursday’s double-double (double digits in points and rebounds) was the 39th of her career.
Mader made three 3-pointers among her 11 points in support of Dungee, but Brice Calip was held to six points and the Roughers owned the boards 42-26, getting nine from Mims, six from Aaliyah Dailey-Lee and five each from Ford and Leigh Westbrook.
