First, our interior players all just stood around and looked up at the ball and didn't put their rear ends on anybody. Our guards, mostly Cade, got some long rebounds on missed shots, but we were dominated inside on the glass. Just something we need to really work on as the year goes along.
Second, the kids didn't do a very good job of scouting and/or following their scouting report -- defensively. Jones is good, but obviously doesn't trust his right hand on the dribble. Thompson kept taking his little right fake and then was out of position to keep him from going left with the dribble. Capel finally got tired of watching this, as I did, and he put in CJ, who did a better job of overplaying his left hand. Jones scores in the second half were mostly on put backs, free throws and break aways. This is how you play him. Same with Liggins, has no left hand. He did everything and made every fake in the book to his left so as to put himself in position to drive to his right. I thought early we let him get away with this at will, but adjusted pretty nicely as the game went along.
Third, our freshman played like freshman. They will improve as the year goes. I really like clark and newell is a lot better than what he showed in this game.
Fourth, late in the game, Blair and the others were to be aggresive going to the rim. This is sound and basic strategy. Often, particularly blair, would attack the rim but not go all the way to the rim. He would only get to a few feet and then bail out and take a 3-4 foot off balance and goofy shot. The whole point is to go all the way to the rim so as to force the opposing players into either fouling or allowing the layup. Blair bailed them out by not forcing the contact at the rim but instead allowing them to intimidate him and others into poor short shots. Blair and Cade did get to the rim some, but all in all, I think Capel will be able to use this tape to teach Blair and others about this issue.
Fifth, Capel did a masterful job in this game of mixing up his defenses and keeping the Cats off balance. We could have won this game. If we limit the Cats to one shot more often, hit some free throws, and get a little better play out of a few players, we could have one. Should be a good tape to teach from.
All in all, we played a lot better than I thought we would. Some of the positives for me included the toughness and moxie of Blair and CJ, our willingness to play to the buzzer and the fact that we need Cade and Fitz to be our best players and against as good a team as we will face, they were.
