Having it only apply to men's basketball seems odd, and it further complicates an already intricate system. Why should it be ok for a coach in one sport to get unlimited calls and another sport not?

I'm also wondering how much thought they gave to kids who don't have unlimited calls or texts. I imagine the number of teens affected by this decreases all the time, but there's still the potential here for college coaches to end up costing kids a lot of money in text fees (and if a kid can't afford unlimited texts, those fees are even worse).

Finally... if I'm a recruit, I don't want to have coaches talking to me constantly. These are 16 year old kids. They need some breathing room.

Exactly my thoughts as I read the article in this morning's newspaper.

On the one hand it's good that coaches don't have to worry about the number of calls and texts they make. Kelvin would have benefited greatly if this rule had been changed several years ago. But I don't see how this could possbily be good for young student athletes, and for the reasons you correctly outlined?

This will also open the door to automated calls and texts from coaches, similar to the unwanted spambot and telemarketing calls we get on a regular basis, despite the fact that we have been on the state and federal no call lists since the law's inception.

I feel sorry for these kids, which is more than I can say about the NCAA in making this decision.

I agree that most kids will not mind at all. Those who don't, though, could potentially have every phase of their life interrupted by phone calls and text messages.

We all know from interviews with recruits over the years that many of them eventually tire of the attention, so they do all sorts of things to avoid it. Now, their only escape, 24-7, will be turning off their cell or checking their caller ID before answering the telephone at home. And, what about the kids who don't have unlimited texting as part of their cell phone service?

Maybe I'm making too much out of the change. But I can see real problems ahead for some of these kids, unless guidelines are put in place to protect their privacy and well-being. Isn't that what the NCAA is supposed to do? Seems to me their only thought was to make enforcement of the rules easier by simplifying a complicaed set of rules for the coaches. I like that part. I'm just not sure it's best for the kids? Guess we'll know in time if Sawyer and me are right, or we'll just making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Most plans involve unlimited texts anymore. I think this rule is probably broken by most people anymore so trying to legislate this rule is going to end up with just about every program in probation.

i feel bad for Kelvin Sampson right now that NCAA basically took him out of coaching college ball for texting kids and now they are letting coaches texting kids alot more that is unfair

The thing with Sampson is that he knew it was against the rules, did it anyway, got caught, and then did it again at Indiana. That middle finger at the NCAA is what got him in the most trouble.

The thing with Sampson is that he knew it was against the rules, did it anyway, got caught, and then did it again at Indiana. That middle finger at the NCAA is what got him in the most trouble.

Scott Drew and Kim Mulkey knew about Kelvin and they did it anyway. I don't know how another school in the same conference does the same thing and they don't get a stronger penalty. They knew it was against the rules moreso than Kelvin (and he totally knew!)!
