I love how this clown for the NCAA says that the school pays $100,000 per athlete, and A&M states they have only made $20,000 on Manziel. Using the A&M example, numbers show that donations have increased 70% up to about $740,000,0000 at A&M since Manziel became the starting quarterback.

This is one of those issues where I have a hard time seeing the other side of the story. Schools make millions of dollars off their athletes, in return for their athletes getting to take college classes for free. When I decided to go to graduate school and didn't want to pay for it, I got a job at the school. I didn't generate millions of dollars for the university and still got free classes. If I did generate millions for the school, you can bet I would want a piece of that action.

The NCAA is a joke and Texas A&M is lying their #$%es off

Then do what businesses do....close your "divisions" that lose money or don't have some intangible benefit that outweighs the loss.

Football and men's basketball are businesses that collude together to hold down the wages that they pay their most important employees. It is wildly unfair that those athletes aren't paid.

Emmert is a hypocrite of the highest order and should be ashamed of himself.

they can't close divisions ... schools lose money because of title 9 ...

the athletes get thousands of dollars of benefits ... and hundreds of thousands of dollars in training ..

it is just like bob stoops told sam bradford as a frosh .. those 14 jerseys in the stands are not for you ... they were for heuple ... and that will be true next season if cody thomas is the qb (also #14) the jerseys won't be for him ..

Of course you can close divisions....Temple just closed 7 programs to save money.

Yes this will require a radical change to the system but the current system is wildly unfair and enriches an elite few (very highly paid coaches and administrators at both the schools and the NCAA/Confernce level) at the expense of athletes.

You could just take football and basketball out of the athletic department, pay athletes fair value and not give them scholarships (treat it at the businesses they are with the school getting any profits as the owner of professional sports teams)...they are just paid employees. Then athletic departments would rationalize what sports they offer as schools would view the athletic department as a cost center and the cost they would subsidize would depend on the advertising and other intangible benefits they believe they get from having an athletic department.

Wow, the kids get a free education and room and board with the opportunity to make millions later if they make the pros.

If they do pay for play then we lose college athletics. You can't pay the football players and not pay anyone else. Most schools lose money in basketball. All women's sports would go away. Most schools would go away so you wouldn't have anyone to play.

That is right, I believe that OU would lose men's hoops because all you have to do is look at the empty seats.

By the way, at A&M people donated because they joined the SEC not because of Johnny Football.

By the way, taking football and basketball out of the athletic department and continuing to play would violate Title 9. The Feds can do Title 9 because universities accept federal funds which means they have to provide equal opportunity. Those funds are greater in most universities than athletic revenue. Using this idea, why do schools even need to play sports - lets just have farm teams for the pros like baseball. There is no need for OU to have a football or basketball team.

If I can convince someone to buy my photograph, or buy my jersey, or play a video game because I am in it, I should be able to profit from that.

In my scenario above (one of many that could be created) it would not violate title 9....the football and basketball players would no longer be students...they would be employees. Football and men's basketball would be professional sports teams and the athletes would be employees.

Yeah, someone should give the kids something. I can't believe there is no monetary incentive like a free education or free room and board.

I am all for a stipend for the athletes to have more spending money. But some that say they cannot buy clothes or have food to eat is ridiculos. When I was at out there was a backup offensive lineman that was in alot of my classes. He hardly played, but recieved free room and board, free food, free clothes ( he said he basically got all the OU apperal he wanted for free), free tutoring. He put alot of work in, but he admitted he would not be at OU if it wasn't for football.

For me it all goes back to if a player puts in the work and actually takes advantage and goes for a degree, then he is being well compensted.

So you agree they are paid....all we are arguing about is the amount. I say let the free market determine the appropriate amount.

This sounds like something I would sell to my slaves if I were a cotton plantation owner in Mississippi in the 1700's.

"In exchange for you working on my farm for no money, I will provide you the following:
-Free room and board
-Free food
-Free healthcare
.......

And then I will have zero labor costs and sell my product for maximum profit! Who's with me!"

Really you want to compare College scholorship that is a choice to accept by a football player to slavery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK Before it goes any further. Were you quoting the movie Django Unchained? Never seen it so I have no clue. Just googled calvin candie

You guys need to dig a little deeper before worrying so much about the poor ball players not being paid. The 1st issue is Pell Grants. Everyone of them that qualify economically gets one. That is several thousand dollars per year that goes right straight to their pockets. Perfectly legal.

The second thing is the new Heddington Hall scam. Why do you think that Stoops and Joe C. get on TV and claim the new athletic dorm is a game changer when the kids only stay there as freshmen. Well, that nice new facility enables them to jack up the room and meal rates charged to the general student population. Those rates are the basis for what the athletes get paid when they move out as sophs. Those checks come every month and that money is plenty to cover their rent and food in an off campus apartment with a good amount leftover. Again, perfectly legal.

Uh, if one were caught up in that deal, wasn't slavery kind of a mandatory for those folks? None of these kids are under any obligation to go to college and play ball.

Haha, yes, Calvin Candie is a character in the film Django Unchained.

Also, I am not comparing football to slavery. I am comparing the concept of delivering a service (in this case, football) and getting a free dorm room the size of a closet and an education in exchange for no compensation, WHILE the host (plantation in slavery, university in athletics) collects the hundreds of millions from your labor.

Worst example EVER!!

These kids have a choice. slaves did not.

They know what there signing into. If you don't like the deal don't sign it's as easy as that. You wanna get a steady paycheck quit playing sports and get a job, like the rest of us that are not lucky enough to be as talented as you.

What's next? We have to pay high school kids in sports? they generate money for their school. Pee wee?

You wanna see how fast college sports will go down in flames. Start paying players and you find out real quick. Yeah let's ruin this for everyone. The players will be the one shooting there self's in the foot in the long run. When theY got no college to showcase there skills to the pro's, what are they going to do then?
