NCAA Violation

Re: What incentive does YoYo have?

What incentive does YoYo have for extending benefits to players? This had to come from the actual coaching staff.

It didn't. They likely knew about it. So, likely, did Joe C., Boren and everyone else. Once someone turned the guy in, though, they had to do something about it.

What you're missing is that no one is winning the "right" way.

It's okay. I get your point. Again, my life used to revolve around the college sports world and I had my head in the clouds as well. I no longer live and die by OU sports, though, because I'm around enough people who've played to know what really goes on.

It's a business - whether we want to believe it or not.

The result isn't nearly as important, at anything, as the process used to get that result. Until you come to understand that, you are lost.

He is right that everyone does it to some extent. Kansas a couple years ago got caught giving gifts to graduating seniors, espn had an article from a Kentucky walk on that said if you wanted or needed cash it was available, OU coach set up a loan for a player so he could get transcript released. It happens all the time. Maybe not in thousands of dollars, but little here little there.

A while back, I went and visited a friend who roommate was a walk on for a track team at another school. The track member would not even allow me to buy him a drink on his 21st birthday because since I did not have a previous relationship with him, it would violate NCAA rules. The track person told me to give the money to my friend as a gift and he could buy the drink as they had a relationship. So I gave my friend some money and he bought the drink. How often do you think this happens when more then a drink is involved.

You're not the one getting the result. You're not the one playing the game. You're not the one whose reputation and livelihood is at stake. I'm not going to judge these guys because I've never been in their shoes. Those who I've talked to who have know that this is a part of big-time college athletics. Period.

If this is true...do you think it was just YoYo doing it on his own?

Northwestern looks and plays the way they do because of more stringent academic requirements, not because they don't cheat. And if everyone's doing it, then why do guys like Calipari get in trouble?

Gonna hear the words "Lack of Institutional Control" being thrown around if this was really a 2nd occurrence.

No we wont. OU discovered the incident and reported it immediately. oU fired its staff member.

Did they? You sure? Has been alleged the same type of infraction occurred in Europe, while the program was still on probation. If true, and the guy was kept around to continue knowingly violate NCAA rules, that would absolutely constitute lack of institutional control.

Happens all the time, even here. Surprised and disappointed that they got caught. Completely malum Prohibitum infraction.

Nothing I've read said OU knew about it after Europe. I don't think that came to light until after the Bahamas.

Indy, everyone knows these things go on at some level, I think many WANT to believe they don't, though we know they probably do.

OU seems more guilty than many schools because they self-report.

It's true. Whether ANY of us want to admit it, it's true.

If what I'm hearing is true, then Yo Yo was certainly the fall guy in this situation and that's too bad. Also, as long as Boren and Castiglione are around, we won't be competitive the way we want to. This situation was handled in a way that no other program would have handled it.

Youre outta your mind

Really doesn't matter. If it happened and is documented somewhere and OU didn't know, they should have. That's how it could be viewed by the NCAA for a program recently off probation and now with problems under three consecutive coaches.

Get out of here.

I have a good friend (die hard OSU fan and huge financial supporter) that says this happens under Travis Ford all the time, he hates it but says that it happens. I guess OSU doesn't work as hard at catching it.

Kruger and his coaching staff to my knowledge have never been involved with stuff like this. Actually that is why he was wanted so much by OU. Needed someone squeaky clean after Capel and Sampson.
