New Coach

kelvin and lon are great coaches. their success is only limited by the talent they are coaching.
lon's problem is he couldn't recruit high level talent....even after taking ou to the final 4.
if kelvin had been able to coach that last group of great recruits...he might still be coaching ou today.
kelvin proved himself at houston and is now recruiting great talent.
nil only makes his job easier.

NIL only makes the job easier if your program is paying top dollar. Ou is near dead last in the sec for NIL spending in basketball.

Name three Tech players without looking at their roster. How many future NBA players do they have? What schools did they get their transfers from? How much exactly are they paying them?

We know they out paid us for the Drake transfer from Oklahoma just last offseason. U think jt toppin took a discount to live in the worst p4 college town in the country?

Will not matter unless you have the $$$ to pay the players. Player payroll is what matters.
I disagree. Of course it matters to an extent but a good coach should outperform his talent.
I don't think we see that right now.

Here is where you guys lose me. For 13 games this season, so many of the sunshine pumpers were crowing that Miles and Elvis are better than Los and Oweh (and JM) and saying that we upgraded our backcourt. Now, when those of us who pointed out the lack of athletic ability are being proven right in conference play, the narrative shifts and it's back to "we just don't have the talent to compete because we lose guys to NIL and can't get the players other programs can get." We had two of those guys last year. One now starts at PG for one of the best programs in America. The other is having an outstanding season and is the leading scorer for the 6th ranked team in America. With those two guys on our roster last year, plus Soares and Moore, Moser coached us to a 2-11 record against the field.

As for Toppin and any other players -- Lubbock is a sh*thole, no doubt. But Norman isn't exactly LA. Let's imagine every school in America had equal NIL dollars. Do you see many kids beating down the door to play for a career mid major coach who has two good seasons on his long track record, and who has shown no ability to win at the P4 level? With Culture Wall as our coach, we would likely have to not only match, but drastically exceed the NIL offers of other schools.

except you haven't been proven right.
we didn't lose the a&m game because of a "lack of athletic ability"......or because miles/elvis are worse than uzan/oweh

Alabama ran us off the floor. Elvis didn’t score against A&M. Georgia was far more athletic than we are. Look at how many of our shots get blocked every game. Look at how many times we can’t finish at the rim. Look at the FT discrepancy. All of those speak to team athleticism. The front court is not much different than last year since Wague was in witness protection till Saturday. The difference in personnel is in the back court.

Hugley was a pretty good big man. With he and Godwin splitting time, that was a solid to good frontcourt. They weren’t great on defense but rebounding and offense was much better with that duo than this year’s mess.

When Hugley got hurt, there was a significant drop off to the team.

did you know georgia beat kentucky and your beloved oweh worse than they beat us?
is kentucky less athletic than georgia?

Per Wikipedia, Moser has 2 more sweet 16s, 1 more elite 8, and 1 more final 4 than mccasland

Mccasland is 1-2 all time in the ncaa tournament per Wikipedia. Not great, Bob.
This is where all of these arguments are hilarious.

Came here to see McCasland slander??? I won't have it!

Was surprised we got Moser when we hired him, but I wanted Grant McCasland.

YearTeamYear Before McCaslandMcCasland effect
2024-2025Texas TechKP 63 (16-16)(yr1) KP 31 (23-11) , (yr2) KP 17 (12-4)
2018-2023North TexasKP 320 (8-22)(yr1) KP 146 (20-18), (yr6) KP 31 (31-7)
2017Arkansas StKP 251 (11-20)KP 124 (20-12)

2 tournaments with North Texas, getting one win and 13-seeds each time.
1 tournament so far with Texas Tech, they lost to NC State during their magical run.

Would trade a left body part for a McCasland/Moser swap.

In 21 years, Moser has been to the tournament twice. Twice. Flash in the pan.
Grant has been 3 times, on pace for 4 times in 9 years with less.

If Grant doesn't have more tournament wins in the next 12 years, I would be utterly shocked. He will have doubled his appearances this year in less than half the time.

(btw, I am clearly out on Moser now)

Be fair, anyone can have a bad two decade stretch. Remember: his high school recruiting is great. Guys like Cooper and Cole and Luke and Los and Owen have really become building blocks.

Joe C has to do something. Keeping Loser, or hiring another failure, would do immeasurable damage to the program.

I agree. He has to get the next one right.

We should pursue Fred Hoiberg imo. He's a good coach. I cannot imagine that nebraska would be considered a better job, even with how low our stock is right now (and even with him being born in Lincoln). Recruiting wise, being next to tejas > whatever is next to nebraska (altho they are closer to chicago). Nebraska is still trying to get their football program stable so I imagine they are much more focused on that than their basketball program (surely, worse than we neglect the bball team, surely, right? Ugh).

I was leaning Bryce Drew, but he doesn't have any P5 experience. I don't want a repeat of what we're going through now.

He did coach Vandy, but flamed out after one good year.

I won't completely rule out a coach from a lower level, but it needs to be someone who has been consistently great at that level. Moser had two good years in his entire career. I was guilty of overlooking that when we hired him.
