New Coach

You hearing that or commenting on what I posted?

Yikes.. Google says it's still reportedly 6.5 mil. Disgusting. Hopefully it goes down after this season another 4 mill (which is how much it down from 10.5ish last year supposedly)
If the buyout drops to 2.5 million after the season, I could see that happening. If it’s 6.5 million, probably not.

I assume Porter is currently, along with his agent, looking at potential openings. I think, quietly, people in the industry know he's "open to work" (moving on from OU). DePaul was "real" last year in the regard that Moser would have left. What wasn't "real", IMO, was DePaul's interest in paying what it would have taken to get him.

As of today, and I don't see how it changes, he'll miss yet another tournament. Assuming that happens, it's best for both parties to move on. Moser is a competitor and I think he wants to prove his failures (at OU) are more to do with OU, and everything that the job entails, than himself. OU will prefer Moser accept another HC job because it'll lower the cost of their failure(s).

Some call it using a parachute.

Disclaimer: not going to list programs like West Georgia, Bellarmine, or other low majors that Moser likely wouldn't take. It's better to be an assistant than a head coach at some programs.

Potential openings (that could fit IMO):

Minnesota - big win vs Michigan but that still shouldn't change anything. The Ben Johnson era has been bad and should be ending soon. I kind of like the fit but I think Minny will want someone with recent tournament success/participation.
VCU - I expect Ryan Odom to move to a better job. Would be a sneaky good fit for Moser. It's a program that has a clear cut blueprint for success.
Charleston - Moser basically takes Charleston level talent anyway so I could see the fit...dependent upon openings and how they finish, I could see Chris Mack getting a better job after Year 1.
Northern Illinois - geographically, this would be a great fit. It's only 40 minutes from where PM was born/grew up. He could go home and build his own program from scratch essentially. The Huskies haven't been to the big dance since the mid-90s. Pay isn't great (may be able to offer their next coach $400-500K).
Buffalo - another MAC school that doesn't pay much.
Western Michigan - hey, another MAC school. Reportedly they pay a little more than Buffalo and/or Northern Illinois though.
Bradley - Brian Wardle should be getting "called up" after this season, finally. Bradley is located in Peoria, IL, which is about 2 hours from where PM is from, and they pay fairly ($800K+). This would be a really good fit.
Drake - I think Drake would want someone better but I can see a scenario where Ben McCollum moves on after one year and Moser being a candidate.
Appalachian State - probably time for Dustin Kerns to get a better job. We'll see how the season progresses, though
Arkansas State - After 2 years, Bryan Hodgson has done enough to warrant another job. Wouldn't be a bad gig for PM. Take what Hodgson has built and keep it
going.
George Mason - Tony Skinn might get a better job

Other potential openings (that could fit but aren't as ideal IMO):

Tulsa - Eric Konkol's time is up. I don't see Tulsa pining for an in-state coach who isn't getting things done, though. That would be a tough sell.
La Salle - Fran Dunphy is 76 years old...that lands him on retirement watch
Fordham - There's a chance they fire Keith Urgo. It's a really tough job in the A10 though and Moser should be able to find something better
South Florida - open now.....doesn't feel like a fit
Florida International - they're the type of school that could renew their commitment to basketball after firing their HC (Jeremy Ballard) but I doubt they'll pay Moser level money.
UNLV - I think they'll move on from Kevin Kruger but probably want someone better than PM.
Louisiana (Lafayette) - open now...but nah
Louisiana (Monroe) - open now...but nah
San Diego - they actually pay well but I can't see Moser coaching there.
San Francisco - Chris Gerlufsen is doing a moderately good job there, which may warrant someone else taking a chance on him, but it's not a likely landing spot for PM, IMO

Other potential openings (that won't likely hire Moser IMO):

Miami (FL) - open now
Virginia
- open now
Syracuse
Indiana
Florida State
Virginia Tech
Kansas State
- I think they keep Tang at least one more year but you never know
Arizona State
Villanova
Iowa
Rutgers
Texas
LSU
Washington State
- David Riley could move on already but they wouldn't call Moser, right?

Great summary.

Porter would fit back in the Valley. However, I don't see Bradley hiring a coach that was once fired by their rival Illinois State, even if he has since taken Loyola to the Final Four. Drake? If it opens, maybe.

You're right: Ben McCollum isn't long for Drake. The guy killed it in D-II at NW Missouri State while waiting for the right D-I job. Not sure if we'd do a coach swap with Drake at this point, but we did get a women's coach from there.

Northern Illinois is in limbo. It's a bad MAC program. They've just joined the Mountain West in football only, leaving their other sports in a lurch. They haven't been kicked out of the MAC in their other sports yet, but will probably end up in either the Horizon or OVC.

I think Porter moser should go back to smaller school like Loyola or DePaul or similar. That’s where he belongs. I also think we all know a big part of this problem isn’t moser, but OU. It’s failed leadership and a lack of commitment to support the program. Lesser programs with smaller budgets are doing far better than OU because they have better leadership and more commitment to their programs. OU leadership has completely failed the program, football included.

Wuuut? I had no idea we hired a failed coach from Illinois state... i thought he upgraded jobs. read this below. Sound familiar?

Moser fired by Illinois State
Associated Press

NORMAL, Ill. --

Illinois State University fired basketball
coach Porter Moser on Monday, citing a "lack of progress" in his four
seasons at the school.

Moser, who had three years remaining on his contract, was 51-67
since taking over at Illinois State in 2003. His teams had a losing
record in three of his four years at ISU.

"This isn't about wins and losses from a particular season,"
athletic director Sheahon Zenger said in a statement. "This is
about a program, and the management of that program. I have talked
this over with President [Al] Bowman and he concurs with the
decision."

Illinois State finished 15-16 this year, losing 68-65 last week
in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.
Under Moser the Redbirds were never higher than a No. 6 seed in the
conference's postseason tournament.

Moser's winning percentage was the third-lowest by an Illinois
State head basketball coach and lowest by a head coach with more
than two seasons on the job, the school said in a statement.

The contracts of assistant coaches Chris Jans, Daniyal Robinson
and Brian Barone also were terminated.

Officials at the school said a search for a new head basketball
coach will begin immediately. Moser did not immediately return a
call for comment Monday.

Wow! Who knew? ‘ this is about a program and the management of that program’. Hmm sound familiar? So 2 lucky years at Loyola and the entire narrative for him changed.

You know when a coach is struggling like PM and coaches that compete with him say what a great program he runs… it’s only cause they don’t want him fired… too easy to beat.

Great point(s) on Northern Illinois. For some reason, the recent football move totally slipped my mind.

It would be a great geographical fit but yeah, as you've said, it's a bad program with low pay, bad facilities, and conference/future uncertainty.

Northern Illinois would make sense in the Valley for basketball. It would actually elevate the program, or should, but yeah, the Horizon seems to be the likeliest choice.

Honestly, it's hard to gauge where Moser could land next year. Ideally, for Moser, Valentine gets hired away from Loyola but he's not exactly killing it there (they're okay, not great).

The Valley would be great for NIU, but not vice versa. Therefore, NIU's not going there.

NIU would drag the conference's NET ranking too far down. The Valley is trying to be more than a one bid league.

There's some blasts from the past. Sheahon Zenger, then the Illinois State AD, ended up at KU and tanked their football program with a series of bad hires.

I did not know Chris Jans was an assistant to Porter at one time. He's resurrected his career and is now at Mississippi State.

I didn't know that either.. hes blowing away pm

because ou lost a close road game to the #13 team in the country ?

lol ok
Look, if we played well, played with toughness and grit, and lost a well-fought battle against a better team then you tip your hat and move on. But it was HOW we lost that game. The in-game coaching was terrible and we didn't compete well enough to win. Our NBA level point guard mailed in a half-hearted (at best) performance. I don't care if you're playing the Thunder, you don't get outrebounded by 28 unless you just aren't competing hard enough.

I’m going to remain hopeful that we could somehow retain Dayton, Kai Rogers, and Alec Blair going into next year. New guy needs to be able to keep those guys in house.

Also, don’t look now but there’s a certain wing from Ada Oklahoma averaging 11 pts and 8 rebounds a game this year that we should’ve retained last year. Could really use somebody with a nose for the ball.

I really want rogers. But I'm sadly not going to count on him until he's wearing our jersey..

lol ok
There is more than enough talent on this team to not be 2-5 in SEC play right now. You can’t have a HC that is only successful in non-conference play like PM has been since he’s been in Norman. OU now has 11 games left. 9 of those are against ranked teams. I think everyone can see that PM isn’t surviving this season. It’s not too early to start talking about the next guy.

lol ok
Cmon boulder… it’s not about 1 game and you know that. Btw, that same team we had a 18 pt lead in the 2nd half…and loss.

Should have beat the horns.

That’s just THIS season.
