New Coach

It's behind a paywall, but Berry Tramel had an article in yesterday's Tulsa World stating that due to financial reasons, OU cannot justify firing either Venables or Moser.

Like Berry or not, when the OU athletic department wants to get a message to the public, they channel it through Berry.
There’s no way Moser wants to stay in Norman. He’s not an idiot. It’s not working out. I would be shocked if he didn’t find another job.

He is getting paid several million a year. Not many people walk away from that for a step down to a mid major, which is what he would have to settle for. And I’m sure he is delusional enough to think he is the right guy for this job.

Last year I think OU wanted the buyout from DePaul. I imagine this year they’d let him walk.
Now they have a better coach than pm.. but maybe they'll think they can do better because he has a losing record in his first year

Disagree. It saves a "firing" on his resume and he can frame why he left and he'll extend his shelf life. We can at a min, negotiate the buyout

Easily can have a good person in a bad role and they get fired and move on to kill
it somewhere else. That is probably Moser .. he took Loyola to the Final 4 .. probably never should have promoted himself to a place whose AD thinks they hired a guy so the problem is solved.

Speaking of failing hard, that set currently includes Joe C. His one amazing hire is the laurel he has camped on for two decades. He is a one hit wonder.

A problem is that OU is not an attractive job right now. Bad years in a row, overall poor fan suport, including students. Would take someone with a super ego
to think he could waltz in here and just to the tournament quickly. That would take a semi full of money and I don't see one of those parked anywhere near Norman.
It's double horrible that both football an basketball are in the toilet at the same time.

I think there are talented coaches who would come to OU. Will OU get another splash hire (like PM was)? No. But there’s dudes out there that probably think OU is a good job.

Have to swing on a young up and comer. Anything is better than pm

We have had examples of how anything is not better. Gibbs -> Schnellenburger -> -Blake. Or Nebraska. Doesn’t always work out well. If Joe C is still minding the ship I will expect another failure.

The "Blame it on Joe" stuff gets so old, especially when it's backed up by non-facts. Joe C. has a long list of
excellent hires. Some of them may be in sports you don't care about, but his job is to make a success of the entire athletic department, not just to cater to your preferences.

Just keeping OU in the black year in and year out is no small accomplishment; very few schools manage that feat.
