Has anyone watched Cortes or Noland live this year? Seen film on both, more on Noland this year it seems like. How's Cortes doing this season?

Line up for next season:
Harmon
Gibson
Harkless
Hill/Victor
Victor/Grad Transfer
Guards off bench would be Phipps, Noland and Cortes then? Was just thinking about it and what the team could look like or need.

Cortes is doing well, game is really easy to him. He could get 30+ almost anytime he wants.

Can’t forget that seniors can come back. I’d say they’ll all leave though, just a guess. Also Ric will probably get some minutes unless they get a big grad transfer.

I was kind of thinking Ric and Victor could split mins at the 5 if needed. Just hard banking on Ric or Garang making that big jump. Do you think Cortes gets minutes next year as our backup PG?

Probably get about as many minutes as Phipps this year. Maybe 3-4 minutes a half to spell Harmon. If he’s not ready I’d say Harkless can play some backup pg.

I know Kuath has already stated he’s out. Sounds like his family could use the support and he doesn’t have any NBA future whatsoever— I also doubt an extra year at OU will significantly impact his overseas prospects.

I view Manek and Reaves differently. Right now, I’d say Manek has zero chance at the NBA. He won’t get drafted; MAYBE he gets a camp invite. But his NBA prospects are very low currently. Coming back for another year could only help him there. Yes, his age would be a turnoff, but let’s say he came back and had a stellar fifth year— it could catch the eyes of NBA people and whatever chance he’d have would likely go up, not down. I don’t know his family situation, but based on what we’ve read over the years, I don’t get the impression they are in dire financial straights. Overseas will be there for him regardless. It’s also such a great time in your life at that age— I think if I’m objectively counseling Manek, I’d advise returning. This assumes of course that he likes it in Norman and would enjoy playing another year.

Reaves is tougher. I think he’s a borderline NBA prospect right now. He can affect the game in multiple ways; but his shooting has deteriorate so much that it has to be a turnoff to anyone scouting him for next level right now. But he’s intriguing. A fifth year for Reaves could do wonders— or it could potentially hurt him if he really doesn’t get better and instead just gets a year older.

My main point would be this— let’s assume these kids love playing college hoops and are enjoying their time in Norman. Also factor in that their last two years have been altered by rona— their experience lessened and limited. Neither is risking much by staying another year. Worst case they don’t improve their NBA prospects— but Europe would still be there. And career ending injures in college basketball are really rare. Very small risk with that. Now, if either or both just WANTED to leave and were done with the college game/scene, then sure, I’d tell them to go do what they want. But if the desire to stay on campus was still there, I don’t think they are risking much at with their futures by staying— probably only increasing odds.

Usually by the time you’re 22-23 you are ready to move on from college & start making money. Them coming back a year won’t help their draft status, Manek has no chance to ever make a league roster. Look at Doolittle he was just simply done. They have to really just be enamored with the college life and/or still need more hours for their degree.

I can’t imagine either of them will come back. Reaves would be coming back for a sixth year of college and further delaying his chance to make money playing basketball, whether that be in the States or overseas. There is almost no chance an NBA team would draft a 24 year old. As for Manek, the only way I could see him even entertaining the idea is if he feels like his health issues this year robbed him of a chance to play to his potential, but even then, coming back for another year seems unlikely. Obviously I’d love to have both of them back for selfish purposes because they would help our team a ton, but I just think people underestimate the sacrifice they would be making. If you have the choice between playing for free and playing for money, it’s hard to turn down the latter. Plus, if you really think you have NBA potential, you almost certainly will improve more playing in the G League or overseas, where you play more games and practice and play every day against pros.

When does this "transfer market" recruiting season heat up? Right after the season? Man wish there was an outlet that at least made an effort to follow OU basketball recruiting, some. Appreciate the efforts of posters here..

Ya, Reaves I'd say is a 0pct chance.. Dude can go make tons of money in Europe or possibly make a NBA roster. 6'5 PG that is smart/defend just needs to shoot at a higher clip.

Manek, maybe he wants to break records at OU even though it would be 5 seasons would be the only reason to come back. Manek can make some serious cash I bet playing in Europe eventually.

We just need a real good 10pt 10reb transfer to come in.. then we don't have to worry about Ric or Victor getting major minutes. I'm a little worried about guard depth tho as well.

A good friend of mine told me last week that he has seen Bijan play in person several times this season. He is really high on him, said he thinks OU got a good one. My friend is a student of the game and his dad was a coach, so I listen when he has something to say about a future OU player!

Personally, I like what I have seen on video of Cortes. But, IMO, Noland is the player who could help us next season. He’s already got a college ready body, size and strength. I also think he’s got the skills to go with it. I think he’ll play and play well his freshman season. Not right away, perhaps, but by the start of the conference portion of our season.

What about Alondes Williams? He had a weird season this year due to COVID and has a chance to expand his game next year. He's not going to make the NBA, but he could really improve his earning potential elsewhere with a really good/feature year.

I like Hill as a starter, but I'm not sold on Vic just yet. We've got to get some help in the frontcourt in the offseason.

The bar is set so low for a starting center and the problem is chronic. As for guard depth, we are in very good shape on paper.

i think for sure there will be a transfer in and out next year.

Coach Hartman is killing it in recruiting. Almost single handedly... Pooh is doing great for 2022.

I hope we dont lose hartman. I think he could take over for Lon rather smoothly.

He’s the one I could see coming back, but he’d also be delaying his chance to go make money.

You think Vic comes back? Like Kruger says, I think he just needs to play in games. Maybe he’ll make a jump next year... would hate to lose that athleticism..

Well, to me it’s not JUST about making money as soon as possible. It’s a pretty unmatched time in your life. I went to OU for five years and I was CRUSHED when it was time to go. Had someone given me a legit reason to stay for another year I would have jumped at it. And in their case, playing high level D1 hoops with a chance to go deep into March is just... fun. Again, this assumes neither Reaves or Manek NEED the money right now and delaying a year wouldn’t hinder that. I suppose you could argue an athlete has a finite timeframe to make $, but for me, the risk/reward for staying an extra year would be worth it. For others, perhaps not. I especially think in this case there could be appeal because the last two years of their college experience were so altered. Getting in one more year where things are likely to be closer to normal while likely being a Top 10 team could certainly have appeal.

Yes I think Vic will be back. He’s just dealt with contract tracing, little injuries... etc.
think he takes a huge step!

I think the fact that they have a limited timeframe to make the $$$ makes a difference. Also the past year can’t be fun with the contact tracing. Also most college athletes are there for athletics. Taking another year of school when you already have your degree might not be compelling.

I agree Vic will make a big jump next season. He just needs to play smarter not harder to avoid early foul trouble.

I'd love to add a good transfer, but I also am very confident Vic will make a huge jump. I've heard almost every broadcaster who has worked an OU game this year say that Vic is one guy Lon has gone out of his way to mention to them, all the way back to October. He sounds very confident that Vic will make a big leap offensively, and continue to give us great defense and rebounding.
