It should be obvious to everyone by now that Nick Thompson was not (and likely will never be) what this team needed in a post player. When I saw him play in the NJCAA tourney last year, he spent most of his time hanging out on the perimeter. He didn't go inside to bang the boards or attempt to score from closer than fifteen feet. Does any of that sound familiar?
I had high hopes for Nick when he and Drew combined for some impressive post play with good interior passing early in the season. Since that time, our 6' 8" post player turned shooting guard has done very little but roam the three point line, while Drew does the dirty work inside.
I don't know if that's because he prefers not to mix it up with our opponents' bigs due to his skinny frame, or that is what he has been told to do. Maybe it's a little of both. But if he's doing it on his own, Coach Capel needs to tell him to get his arse inside where he belongs. This team is already at a size disadvantage with most of the teams on our schedule this season. We don't need another guard/wing or whatever Thompson fancies himself to be, setting up camp on the three point line.
If it sounds like I'm down on Nick, you would be right. I'm not the least bit impressed with his performances in the past few games. Tough looks and hard fouls don't mean jack to me!
