No. 9 Norman North scored a major upset over No. 6 Westmoore Tuesday, reversing a history of dominance by the Jaguars in the series.
The Jaguars won by more than 20 in both of last year’s meetings, including a 64-36 regional final win. In this one, early on, the T-Wolves looked determined not to let that happen again. It was the first win for the seniors over Westmoore. Senior guard Kenna Sturgell led the team with 18 points. Sophomore guard Jacie Evans added 15, and sophomore guard Lindsey Waters made four 3s.
“This has been a long awaited game,” Sturgell said. “That was big for us and we’re excited. We’ve got big aspirations, big dreams, we’re ready to get to it.”
The T-Wolves won the game by taking care of the ball. Both teams like to get into their fastbreak offense. Even while facing a full-court press for most of the first half, North didn’t turn it over too often. That held Westmoore in check so that Sturgell could ice the game with a pair of free throws. Westmoore’s Jessi Murcer led her team with 21 but didn’t score in the fourth quarter.
Westmoore 6 16 18 8 - 48
Norman North 7 16 12 16 - 51
WM - J. Murcer 21, K. Murcer 10, Zilajeva 8, Outon 7, Smith 2.
NN - Sturgell 18, Evans 15, Waters 12, Brewster 4, Base 2.
