I only did so once. And it was definitely not spontaneous.
On Feb. 24, 1979, OU had the chance to clinch its first-ever Big 8 men's basketball title at the Lloyd Noble. After a slow start, OU caught and passed K-State, the regular season runnerup, and held a comfortable, double-digit lead going into the final minute of the game.
Back then, security wasn't too interested in stopping students from having a little fun. And since it was historic, I doubt that anyone in OU Athletic Administration really minded it. When the clock hit 0:00 and OU had a 65-52 win over K-State and a Big 8 title in hand, we just let it rip and hung around for both net-cutting celebrations and the TV guys' postgame interviews with Bliss, McCullough and Carrabine. The latter two, the only seniors on the team, were there when the team was 9-17 and didn't even start out that well with a road-heavy schedule.
A few students rushed the court in '77 for the OU-Mizzou game, when OU had its epic 66-63 home win - also known as OU's first-ever LNC sellout crowd effort. But I wasn't one of them. A bunch of us did celebrate into the night, and it was a weeknight, no less. :dance005:
