Westmoore’s Murcer provides spark for talented team
Jacob Unruh

Westmoore sophomore Jessi Murcer is averaging 22 points a game so far this season as the Jaguars are off to a 3-0 start.
Westmoore sophomore Jessi Murcer caught nearly everybody by surprise last season.
That is, everybody except Westmoore coach Andre Guziec, who watched the 5-foot-7 guard dominate at the middle school level the year before.
Murcer would make shots from behind the arc. She could get to the basket. She even had the ability to make tough jump shots while being defended.
It was the complete package that Westmoore needed, and Murcer quickly fit right in with the Jaguars, averaging 17.6 points.
“You never really know how your team’s going to jell until you have your team and she came in and accepted being part of the team instead of having to be just the team herself” Guziec said. “That was huge knowing that she has the skill and the ability to take it on her own if necessary. But coming in and being a part of the team was an exciting surprise ”
Murcer is already off to a fast start this season with an average of 22 points the first three games as undefeated Westmoore looks to take the next step after falling one game shy of the state tournament.
“I think we can learn from it and grow as a team ” Murcer said.
Murcer said individually she’s worked to improve her shot even more along with her ballhandling skills.
“Her comfort level is better right now” Guziec said. “She knows the system, she knows what we expect. I expect great things from her and the other returning starters as well ”
The team as a whole has worked primarily on defense, which could help the offense built around Murcer and seniors Ashley Gomez and Sydney Chastain even more.
“We’re a transition team and if we’re able to get more steals and get up court, it’s really going to help us” Gomez said.
Chastain (9.6 points) returns as the team leader. She was recently named the state’s Wendy’s Heisman Award winner. Gomez (16.9 points) was on The Oklahoman’s Big All-City First Team last season.
They’ve both benefitted from Murcer’s emergence.
“We knew she was good, but we didn’t know how she was going to work with our team ” Westmoore forward Kaci Richardson said. “She came in and really opened it up for us”
