the underdog factor.

Playing as a prohibitive favorite is often a disadvantage - especially if the talent disparity isn't just HUGE. Emotion and gumption can make up for a lot and a cold favorite meeting a revved up underdog can result is a lot closer games than seeding would suggest.

I remember that 1989 game against ETSU and Keith Jennings. NO WAY that team was within 1 pt of OU talent-wise.
 
True that. Plus, the bulk of the fans inside the arenas are cheering for the underdog in close games. This brings some of the home court advantages to the underdog late in those close games.
 
It hurts like heck when our team gets upset, but it should rarely be all that surprising. Every year it happens to several teams, for the reasons detailed above and more.
