Oklahoman has a story that Ortiz is moving to the 2. Makes some sense. She’s probably our most consistent 3-point shooter.

Who are the starting 5 now?

I don't exactly know what we will see from Gabbi this year. The statement that she is our best shooter apparently specified, "in practice." She has been about a 32% shooter over her career, expanding that to about 39% last year in conference play (37% from three). Maddie led in both, 43% and 46%---from three in conference play. But, if you compare to our other scorers, Gabbi was better in conference play than any of them had been in their careers. Gabbi has also been our leading free throw shooter for two years.

It is possible that if she is free to get herself open that she will become a good pure shot shooter. Late last year, she was hitting open threes in big time situations. It really came down to her and Maddie as gunners. I think they began one game with seven threes in the first quarter. Strange thing was that Gabbi was probably our best at a move that we looked to Gioya to do, the dribble into the lane with a running jumper. Gabbi hit that often.

I like the potential that this brings, especially since I expect Ana and Maddie to hit with sufficient frequency that Gabbi would be open a lot. She is tough when she gets her feet underneath her.

I have always thought Gabbi was best when she could fling it from the bleachers when she's set. She never really had the driving ability we need. I think this is a really good move and will pay dividends.

And you'e right Syb, I remember that game when she and Maddie actually bombed the hell out of the other team. I hope Maddie reaches that consistency level this year. That too would be a major plus.

I agree, I think this change will make us a completely different team as well, probably much faster and more scoring. Can't wait!

I did note that in Sherri's media day comments at about the 13:05 mark she states that she has never seen anyone at this level shoot it better than Gabbi when she is in the gym by herself. She said it is elite level business. Also noted in Gabbie's comments when interviewed:

On shooting the ball:
“In the past, I could’ve been more aggressive. I know I want to focus on that whether it be focusing on my shot or always being constantly ready. If my hands and feet are ready, I know it’s going to go in. When I’m shooting on my own, I don’t have to think about it. That’s how confident I am at this point. In practice and in games it has gotten to the point where when I miss, I know exactly why. If I’m in rhythm with hands and feet ready, I’m in a good spot.”

Now if their expectation will transpire in the regular season things will be much better.

This is intriguing since I haven't seen it. There was no reason to believe that she could shoot that well. Well, there have been some observations. I had noticed that Gabbi and Maddie had missed a lot of shots that were put up at the end of the shot clock, out-of-position type shots. It did seem that when they faced the basket, they were deadly. I liked it a lot better when we got the ball to Maddie or Gabbi early in the shot clock. It seemed that fewer turnovers occurred, and better shots were taken.

I had the thought, often, of using Penzo more because she at least got the ball moving. Somehow, open shots occurred when she was on the floor. That didn't happen a lot with TT, Peyton, or Gioya on the floor. We seemed to get trapped or run out of time a lot.

We may have a situation in which if Maddie, Gabbi, or Ana is open, we have a good shooter with an open shot on every possession. That would be nice. If they can hit, that means the traffic inside shouldn't be so bad for Vivi. Interesting thought.

Doesn't matter how good our shooters are if we don't get open shots. We put up too many shots under pressure, out of rhythm and out of range. Our half court offense has never created a lot of easy shots. Even Whitney Hand had a hard time getting open and she is probably one of the best shooters we have had. Before her injury in her final season she averaged less than 7 shots a game. Couldn't get stats for previous seasons but I doubt that she shot more. An elite shooter has to get more open shots.

If ViVi gets going inside we should have more open shooters outside and ViVi is probably better than previous centers in finding them. She just has to get better at kicking out rather than forcing shots when she is well covered by a bigger player.

I see Maddie wide open in the corner, and nobody passes her the ball. I see Gabbi wide open at the three-point line, and Peyton is putting up a running jumper or Gioya is trying to drive into the lane for a jumper. I see LaNesia and TT driving into the lane--with no escape-- and they don't have any way to get the ball back out to two wide open shooters at the three-point line. They waited too long to dish. The open shots are there. Someone has to deliver them.

It is called "ball movement", which we do a poor job of passing the ball, while relying on dribble, dribble, dribble. I have no idea who the starting 5 will be, pretty sure about 3 of them. I am not stating anything different than what we have talked about for the past 5 years (or more). If the girls can't make the defense move and guard, then open looks will be hard to come by. Syb is right, the open shooters are there, just have to move and pass the ball with your head up to find them. I really hope this is going to be a team that will finally answer my prayers. I'll believe it when I see it.

Sounds like our motionless motions offense to me...

Our A/T ratio last year was 0.84.

Mulkey 2/30 = 0.067
Treece 1/16 = 0.063
Dungee 26/51 = 0.510
Carter 43/52 = 0.827
Edwards 65/59 = 1.102
Little 53/47 = 1.128
Wyatt 6/8 = 0.750
Kellogg 1/1 = 1.000

Our departees were not particularly good at handing out assists, or handling the ball. I've seen commentary that Gabbi was not a great distributor, dribbled too much. She was 121/56 = 2.161. She had more assists than TT and Peyton together.

Yikes at those numbers...

You can’t win turning the ball over like that...

The high turnovers are bad because so many were unforced or the result of reckless play.

But the lack of assists is probably a bigger problem. Our point guard should have a ration of more than 3.0. Hopefully more than 4.0.

Best assist to turnover ratio in Big 12 last year was Kristy Wallace at 2.6. Gabbi's ratio was 4th in the Big 12.

Yikes is enough of an exclamation for that kind of performance taking care of the ball. However a little deeper analysis does show some encouragement relatively speaking.

I looked at all of the conference teams assist to turnover ratio and ranked them for both the season and the conference season. OU ranked 8th in the regular season and 5th in the conference season. I did this for two reasons. First you can compare the season to the conference season and see if the team improves especially when you consider the conference season to be the toughest portion of the schedule.

Second I like the conference season results better because you are comparing apples to apple when comparing teams as all the teams are playing the same schedule.

Baylor was hands down the conference leader for both the season and the conference with a/to ratio of 1.64 and 1.23. Only Baylor and ISU (1.23 and 1.14) had ratios greater than 1.0 in the regular season with KSU (1.01) also meeting the 1.0 standard for the conference. Those numbers might indicate which coach is actually doing the most coaching and setting the highest level of expectations.

Comparing the regular season to the conference season 7 teams had a lower ratios in the conference than in the regular season which is to be expected with the tougher schedule. However 3 teams did improve their ratio during the conference season which is significant. They were KSU, Texas and OU.

Of the school that improved during conference season OU had the greatest improvement relative to the regular season improving from 0.84 to 0.90. While the 0.90 is far from desirable the improvement does indicate that the staff is still coaching and that the team is continuing to improve. That is very very positive and give the team something to build on.

Now they just need to step up and get the a/to ratio in the 1.1 to 1.25 range. It can be done as Baylor and ISU have shown.
