OSU Cowboys next year

This OSU team is going to be dreadful. You can't take that kind of backcourt away in college basketball from a team that already wasn't great and not expect a huge regression.

Agreed... Going with their current guards they are bigger and more athletic than they were last year. Losing Evans is big because he is a great player, but he was small and a liability. Forte was a major liability.

They should be better defensively with this group and I still see plenty of PPG out there.

Okie dokie...

I think people are overrating the loss of Forte. Other than being a bomber and money from the FT line he really didn't add that much. Not quick enough to beat guys off the dribble and create shots, easily bothered by defenders with length, was average at best on defense.

I think OSU will be competitive like they are just about every year. However, when Forte was on the court, the opponent's defense was extended because of the threat of a 3-pointer. He was a deadly shooter when left open, so he was a huge part of the opponent's game plan. While I agree he wasn't a strength anywhere else, I believe you are underrating his presence more than others are overrating it.

Honestly, who in the conference will be worse? Texas Tech? Maybe, but doubtful. Iowa St loses a ton but I don't see them at the bottom. KU, West Va, Baylor, OU, UT, TCU will all pretty clearly be better. KSU...I doubt it. Good chance the Cowboys are 10th next season.

Why are OU, UT, and TCU clearly better?

One reason: OSU will not have Jawun Evans next season. Even if you don't agree the Pokes will miss Forte, they will definitely miss Evans. Point guards like him don't come along too often.

OU lost both games to OSU last season; by four in Stillwater and by two in Norman (without Jordan Woodard I might add). Evans had 24 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in the first game. No one else on the team had more than 11 (Forte was one of them). In the second game Evans had 27points, 4 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals (Forte scored 22).

In other words, an OU team with an anemic offense and a porous defense played OSU close in both games last season. The Sooners will have their own version of Evans next season in the form of Trae Young. Everyone else, except Woodard, who wasn't available in the second game, will be back, presumably better than before, not to mention the addition of Young, Polla and Manek.

Everything about the picture I painted in the last two paragraphs tells me OU will be the best team next season. Does that mean they will pick up where they left off by sweeping the Pokes again? I'm not saying that, but I firmly believe that is a possibility.

As I said before, OSU will have some nice pieces among their returning players, and maybe even their newcomers. They still won't have anyone like Evans, which means the point guard edge will go to the Sooners this time around.

kind of depends on how good their PG transfer is, how good Sima is (he avg i think like 6ppg/6rpg in 20 minutes at st john).

theyll have a good bench.

they were a pretty young team last year, I think the only team we werent younger than was actually OSU.

I expect OU to be slightly better than OSU but both tourny teams

Solomon is actually a pretty effective defender. with him on the court opponents scoring dropped more than 10%. Having Sima eligible when conference gets here will be a nice bonus.

I'm not sure that Glover is going to make it to OSU. OSU will improve defensively and I think that Forte's production can be replaced. I think a top 5 conference finish can happen.

PG numbers might be down, but I again think that this team will be better on defense at the 1,2 and post.

He was a good player at a low major, but he was about a 5 ppg midmajor player before that. He's probably worth 8-12 ppg in the Big 12 at this point.

Except for Dante Buford, who averaged 12 points against O-State last season. No, we run him off for some unknown reason and sign another JUCO "All-American".

Sheesh.

Since 1991:

  • Michigan State

Since 1991... 27 years. It just alternates around between Duke, UNC, UCONN, and Kentucky. A few Michigan States, a couple of Floridas... But other than that it's basically Duke, UNC, UCONN, and Kentucky. Guess who is the Vegas favorite to win it all this year? You guessed it, Duke or Kentucky.

OU isn't gonna win a title.... Neither is OSU... Texas... Kansas State.... Iowa State... etc.

Fans, schools, players, etc are obsessed with the NCAA Tournament. The entire season is just for seeding in the NCAA Tournament.. Nobody cares about their conference tournament because they want to be more rested for the NCAA Tournament... All this BS for something they know they aren't going to win. Coaches get fired even when they make the NCAA Tournament but don't advance far enough. The entire damn system is based on this stupid tournament that the same collection of 5 teams wins every damn year.

I fail to see how this logic is any different than people shelling out their money at QuikTrip hoping to win the damn powerball.

Same thing in football.... Lots of folks want to fire Bob Stoops for not winning more national titles. Doesn't matter that the guy wins the Big 12 every damn year, that doesn't matter. Alabama, Alabama, Alabama, Ohio State, USC, LSU, LSU, Clemson, Alabama, Florida, Florida. Just rotates around a few schools, with everyone else being losers.

I was going to call you out for saying we couldn't ever win a NC in basketball (despite the fact that every coach we've had dating back to 1980 has been within 3 games of it, and 3/4 have been within 2), and then I saw that you don't think we can win national championships in football.

:facepalm

Exactly. The biggest derp post I've seen on this board. Also i don't even get where that tangent even came from..

Sheesh.

"Unknown" (to you) isn't synonymous with "terrible."

And if you think we can't beat OSU next year because we won't have Dante Buford, seek help.

Unknown reason...? You think Coach is just picking a dude out and saying I think I want to run him off!

Or maybe they deserve to be let go... just a thought

If the Cowboys finish 8-8 in conference and go to the the NCAA tourney, Boynton is Coach of the Year.

I guess I won't be seeking help.

If I'm the only person on this board completely gutted and disappointed by last season's results then I'll carry that weight. I'd like to avoid more 20-loss seasons if at all possible. I don't like having to throw out parachutes to anyone who will bite less than two years removed from a Final Four run.

And this has nothing whatsoever to do with Buford's exit from the team.

Nice dodge.

Yea OU is in the group of programs capable of winning a national championship. It hasn't happened in 17 years, but it's more possible in football than basketball for OU.

It's basically not possible for 98% of programs in both sports.
