OSU hires...

I think he is a fine coach and OSU will be noticeably better starting next year. However, I think it is fair to say that, night in and night out, having to coach against the likes of Self, Kruger, Tubby, Huggins, Smart, etc will be a rude awakening for any new incoming coach. There are no Texas States, Sam Houston States, Lamars, or Abilene Christians in this league. You better have a great game plan and/or better basketball players every time you step onto the court or you will be a perennial doormat in this conference.

He did get the best of Huggins in this year's tournament, but I would venture to say that result is an exception rather than the rule.....at least in the short term.

When he was Martin's assistant at KSU, Martin turned over the offense to him and he changed it which led to KSU's elite 8 appearance. Many thought he was the genius at KSU behind Martin, but Frank has done a great job at south Carolina so maybe Frank had as much to do with it as did Underwood.

I know this, the K-State fan base wanted Weber fired and Underwood hired. If Weber doesn't get KSU turned around it may not only cost him his job but the AD may be out of a job too. The KSU fans are going to be really sick about this.

I will add, he and Kruger both played for Jack Hartman at KSU so I'm guessing they are more than acquaintances.

he's coached against several big XII coaches as both a head coach at SFA and an assistant at KSU.

Advanced twice as a double digit seed in the NCAA's. He's got a good scowl. I'm not worried about X's and O's. I would just like to see an impact player above 6'8"

Probably a good hire. I've only watched their 2 games in the tourney but was impressed with what I saw. Very sound basketball.

I think Underwood is a good coach and I would not questions his credentials, accomplishments, or pedigree....but I will be interested to see how he matches wits with some old savvy veteran coaches in this conference. I also want to see how his style of play (similar to WV) works in this conference as Big 12 teams begin to become more accustomed to WV and their style.

And yes, Weber is on thin ice at KSU. That was a poor hire to begin with, but maybe KSU felt like that they couldn't get any better at the time.....and went with what they thought was a proven coach.

Isn't not being worried about X's and O's what got you in this mess?

I agree with everything you posted in both posts, but I'm just saying what's being said up here in KC. The afternoon radio show host, a KSU alum, made this a huge part of his show today. He wants Weber fired and Underwood hired in the worst way and he even said on the radio "OSU fans, if you think you are getting a coach who will stay there for a long time you are wrong, when KSU calls Underwood will leave OSU" (paraphrased a little but he basically said that). He's in tune with a lot of KSU fans, very involved in the KSU alumni group and travels to a lot of out of town games.

He did go on to say though, if KSU fires Weber after next year Underwood won't leave OSU after just one year so then KSU has to find another coach and then by the time the timing works out to when they can hire Underwood he may be too old. It was an interesting show to say the least.

He's only beaten one big 12 coach. He beat vcu as one of those higher seeds.

The guy might be good but it looks like OSU saw a record and said he's our guy but didn't even look at who they have beaten and who they have lost to. Northern Iowa beat them. To hire him that fast says they didn't even look elsewhere.

From what you said, I would say this radio host has quite an over-inflated opinion of the Kansas State basketball program.

And I find it hard to believe that any Big 12 coach would leave one Big 12 school for another Big 12 school (exception would be leaving for the KU job under the right circumstances). Were you listening to Keitzman say this? I think he is a KSU guy...right?

His coaching was a lot better the last several years...SFU fans said it had a lot to do with with having Thomas Walkup...BUT..any coach is better than Ford.

They didn't hire him that fast. They've been looking for awhile

I think Underwood is a great hire for OSU.

His teams play hard and are tough minded. He'll recruit well enough.

Plus, he's a midwestern kind of guy that that will play well in Stillwater.

I don't understand trying to argue that he hasn't beaten many P5 teams. First, he also hasn't played many. Second, he doesn't have P5 talent. He coaches at SFA. A better gauge of how good of a coach he is, is how he's done vs similarly talented teams. And he's done well in that regards. If he can recruit, he'll do a "solid" job at OSU.

I'm surprised they waited a week to fire Ford and only a day to hire Underwood. I'm also surprised they didn't wait for KU to lose to make Bill Self tell them no. I'm guessing Underwood was their guy and they weren't sure he'd be around another week or two.

Underwood has been rumored to leave SFA since last summer, everyone knew he was leaving after this season.

Seems they took the smart route. Don't fire one coach until you know you have a better one ready to sign on the dotted line. I'm guessing this deal was put together before they ever fired Ford. Certainly, since they announced it two days after SFU wrapped up their season, it's unlikely they just started talking to the guy on Monday.

I was hearing from oSu people that Ford was out a good two weeks before any public statements were made. I'm assuming they were lining up the next coach first.

I like this "behind the scenes" approach better than the whole "fire the coach, and then look foolish as one name after the other uses you to get raises at their current school" routine.
