When is Oregon going to come after Scott DFW?
they have come after him twice along with some other schools. He is staying at Baylor. Drew may flirt with some jobs as negotiating leverage. But Drew and Baylor aren't stupid. They know they have a great match here.
Baylor has structured a lucrative contract for him with a massive buyout. Very few coaches leave big six conference jobs (Big12, Pac10, ACC, Big East, Big10, SEC) where they have things rolling. Self did- Illinois to Kansas. Gillespie did and it turned out to be a disaster- A&M to UK. Calipari did- but he had issues coming at Memphis. Roy Williams did- KU to UNC. Howland- Pitt to UCLA. Huggins- KSt to West Virginia. Two of those situations involved returning to their alma mater- Huggins/Williams.
You always have lateral moves when success has not been obtained- Bzedelik. Or to stay one step ahead of the wolves- Purnell from Clemson to DePaul.
But apart from those examples, most of the hiring is from up and comers in the mid major arena; ex NBA guys or top assistants at successful programs. Too much risk in going from a Baylor to Oregon.
Baylor is fortunate to have a group of about five very wealthy men who love Drew and basketball that can endow a pool of funds for basketball to keep Drew and staff happy long term- Drayton McLane (owns Astros); Mark Hurd (CEO of Hewlett Packard); Bob Simpson (CEO of Cross Timbers); John Eddie Williams (his law firm received 19% of the $2.3 billion tobacco settlement a few years back); and Jim Turner (CEO of Dr Pepper bottling/former player).
Baylor will always have some disadvantages due to the size of the school. But that is a much larger disadvantage in football than it is in basketball. Drew likes Baylor and Waco and thinks he can compete for national championships there. More importantly, his wife really loves the school and town.
