Ou 78-73

First I may not understand the game the way you do but I did watch it! There is a replay available so you could watch it and categorize the reason for each of the 24 turnovers. I am sure at least 23 were caused by our "style of play".

Second Nicole has improved greatly. My concern is not with her it is that someone in three years should have been able to "coach" her a little better on rebounding. She is not Jo who simply knows how to do it, but with some coaching she should be able to improve.

This team wins, I apparently do not understand how, although even Sherri says she doesn't know how. However they do it I hope they keep doing it.

I think Nicole has a couple of deficiencies that no amount of coaching can overcome. No matter how much time she spends on strength and conditioning, she's never going to be as strong as a player like Jo. Second, I think she's improved her quickness somewhat, but she's never going to be described as quick. This means she has problems rebounding against quicker, stronger players.

But she has worked so hard to improve the areas she can improve on - post moves, free throw shooting and passing - that I can't help but admire her.

Her improvement is clear, but she isnt a good athlete, isnt aggressive, her court awareness is poor and she's stiff. She works to improve and has but has about reached her limit because of her limited athletic ability.

I don't really agree with any of this. Is the ability to place your hands correctly to block a shot without fouling in the heat of action an athletic endeavor? She certainly has that. She has always been underrated (primarily because officials have to accept that you can do it, or they will call a foul) in her ability to block a shot. Even as a freshman, Blair remarked that it was difficult to deal with her because her long reach forced shots to be altered. For some reason, her ability to block shots and alter shots went totally unnoticed until she began to score more consistently. Why is that?

She has always had a nice shooting touch. In fact, I think she has been a little off recently. She goes through periods where she can't miss anything. Then, she rushes things or takes shots she really isn't good at yet. She is still learning what she can hit consistently, and I think she does get excited.

I'm not so sure that her lack of rebounding is exactly a lack of rebounding in the sense that many of you think. She does seem to block out well, and others, including Vegas, seem to take advantage of it. Right now, she can screen well, and I wonder if she isn't taking advantage of Jo's rebounding ability. I also wonder if Jo isn't taking advantage of the emphasis on Nicole. When Jo goes to the bench, I have seen Nicole take over inside on both offense and defense, including rebounding. Is there an energy-saving switch that keeps her from being more aggressive? She has no backup, nor does Jo. I'll be interested to see what happens next year for several reasons.

I think Nicole is an essential. She is our most consistent shooter, percentagewise. Almost like Vegas, she can take over a game, but on both offense and defense. It just doesn't seem to last more than a few minutes at a time.

Griffin has certainly improved, no question. What that means is, she was very limited when she arrived at OU. She is now a pretty good player but certainly has a ways to go.

Rebounding comes from "want to". If you watch Nicole, she seldom makes an effort to go to the rim when a shot is in the air. If she happens to be close to the rim and if the ball comes in her direction, she can normally rebound the ball but her effort to out hustle others to the ball are few and far between.

If she would develop more of a mean streak, it would serve her well. We have seen her be more aggressive in a few games this year and she looks really good when she shows that side. We just need to see it every game.

She averaged 11.6 PPG this year, up from 5.7 from last year...which is very significant. Her conditioning is also much improved.

Things she could do to be a much better player:

1. Go after every rebound with authority
2. Continue to improve her hands
3. Develop a turn around jump shot.
4. Develop more strength

Will she improve for her senior year? I hope so!

An interesting stat:

Sooners are 17-4 when Griffin scores in first four minutes of game, 6-6 when she does not.

Syb excellent writeup on Nicole. I agree with almost everything except her ability to "take over" when Jo is out I think she tries but is much better when Jo is in. I also agree that it is going to be interesting to see what happens next year when Jo is gone! Difficult to replace a double double almost every game. That is why I think someone needs to work with her on rebounding. If she could improve in that area as much as she has in the rest of her game she will indeed be essential. Maybe they have? If so someone else will need to "step up" next year.

On Nicole, IMO her main rebounding problem is that she has hands of stone. She rarely fields a rebound cleanly (or a pass for that matter). It usually bounces off her hands and then she manages to grab it.

I remember when CP3 was talking about her recruitment at OU and one thing that impressed her was one (or more) of her future teammates asking her if she would simply like to play catch. She loved it and was impressed that others did as much as her. CP3 was a vacuum when it came to rebounding and pass receiving as she simply grabbed it cleanly on the first attempt, even those whacky below-the-knees spin passes that Plumley used to dish to her.

With Nicole, below-the-knees entry passes are dangerous as usually they will hit Nicole's hands and then hit the floor before she (or on occasion her opponent) grabs it. And I'm not sure if this can be fixed or is simply an attribute of the athlete involved. IMO it just comes down to hand strength and unfortunately IMO it's definitely lacking in Nicole.

Actually I think Nicole's "problem" with rebounding is that she is just not quick to the ball. A lot of times she blocks out and holds her blocks too long and a number of Jo's rebounds come because Nicole has taken her player out with a good block.

And if anyone thinks the coaches haven't been working with Nicole on her rebounding all three years she has been at OU probably doesn't have a good understanding of the game.

Any college coach understands better than most on this and any board what the players need to work on and you can bet they spend the time trying to correct it.

Nicole will be better next year. Sherri has a knack of getting a lot out of seniors, such as Jo this year. Even Cerina contributed in her senior year and I thought she was the poorest recruit Sherri has brought in.

Oh, I have NO doubt that the coaches have been working on it every year, but IMO I just don't see that much improvement in it since her frosh year. I will agree she is much better at blocking out. But, as far as cleanly fielding RB's, sorry I just don't see it and this is her junior year.

No one was a harsher critic of Nicole than I was. Please note the "was."

I believe she is dramatically improved and has been a valuable asset to the team. In fact, unreplaceable. He desire and ability to score has increased 100 percent. She fights hard. She blocks shots consistently. She runs the floor. She has a solid percentage from the line and she has developed some really strong shots, like her hooks.

But she is not a great rebounder most of the time. She has trouble blocking out, partially because she gets caught a little flat footed defensively around the basket. She is not quick.

But we are in this tournament still because of her. We had the season we did because of her.

She is the most improved player from freshman to junior I have seen in Sherri's tenure. I give the coaches and Nicole praise and credit for that.

We are in the tournament now, so we need her to rebound and block out better. We also need Morgan to score more and not be a turnover machine.

With the exception of the turnovers, I thought we played well enough to win. Not well enough to win Monday, however. Everyone, except Jo, needs to be better.
