Playing a neutral site game in Springfield Massachusetts on 12/21/2016

The last time we played in Springfield, MA, was in November 1984. I took a train up that day and had several hours to kill after the game before the train back to NYC--not easy to do with no car, as back then Springfield was all but locked up on a Sunday. Blue laws, I guess. Worst of all, Illinois kicked our tails in the game.

We actually played there in 1992 as well, a game I went to since it was only two hours from where I lived. UMass was up and coming, and they smoked us that night.

Yeah, I was thinking we played UMass up there when they had that loaded team with Camby, I think. Calipari was their coach.

We were never in that game. We haven't fared well in Springfield, MA, in the 2 previous games.

I'd forgotten the UMass debacle.

I might have to think long and hard before planning a trip north this year!

Sadly, they kicked our butts before Camby set foot on campus. I think he was a junior on their 1996 Final Four team. After that, he went to the Knicks and Calipari went to the Nets. I'm not sure who was the star of their '92 team, but Tony Barbee (didn't he coach at Auburn?) was definitely one of them. That was the first year they went to the NCAA tournament under Calipari. They got on the map the spring prior by going to the NIT Final Four (along with some team coached by Billy Tubbs). Calipari was smart in offering schools like OU a 1-for-2 home-and-home series. They wound up taking 2 out of 3 from us.
