They need guards, not a big guy who will be average at best.

Go sign guards.

Your right with that and to be honest they need a pg, but the downside is you would scare off all the good guards looking for instant pt in 2013.

Uhh.....we have Hornbeak and Hield coming in, and we'll probably take one more guard (Cousins?) here in the late period. Is that not enough?

Need another PG, need another scorer on the wing.

Hield and Hornbeak can score from the wing. PG is our biggest area of need.

However, I would argue that we cannot be a complete team without one more big body inside. Fitz is a defensive liability in certain situations, and M'Baye and Osby won't always be available (foul trouble, injury, etc.).

Clark and Neal can play down low in a pinch. guards and scoring are biggest need.

I guess I will just trust that Lon and Co. know what we need the most.

OU needs bigs for the year after next. I will trust Lon Kruger to sign the players he thinks OU needs.

What is pretty clear is that OU needs a lot right now. I'm not going to be discriminatory as far as picking up talent goes--especially if our coach deems a need at that spot.

bingo, I could even see them redshirting Arent and playing the new body next season, so both players would be available the following season.

I think OU is susceptible to traps, and are easy to defend. Get the ball out of Grooms hands and they can't run their offense or get the ball up court. Get the ball out of Pledger's hands in the half court offense, and they can't score from the perimeter. The key to the college game is guard play and that's OU's biggest deficiency in my opinion.

I think an experienced PG would be a good addition. Heild, Hornbeak, and Cousins are wings, and we don't know if any of them will be ready for D-1 next year. Grooms is an offensive liability but is the only ball handler, press breaker on the team. Blair is a better offensive player but isn't real quick and is not a good ball handler. Cam Clark is too inconsistent. I don't think a juco PG would scare off Steve Clark, and would actually help transition him in during his freshman year.

I'm OK with Fitz, Osby, and M'Baye next year in the post. That's better than a lot of teams. I wouldn't add someone unless they're really solid this late in the recruiting process. There are lots of good options next year and we don't need another project. A solid big man transfer like Osby or M'Baye would be good for a RS year.

A whole bunch of needs. I still want a big guy they think is talented and is willing to redshirt to develope his game further.

If we find a "talented" big man, we need him to play next year. Redshirts just don't happen very often these days.

Let's see. Lon Kruger, 492 lifetime wins vs The Big ABD, message board knowitall. I think I'll trust Coach Kruger's judgment...

I agree with everything you said, except that Hornbeak and Cousins are actually combo guards who can (and do) play the point on their respective teams. Hornbeak swings to the one when need be. From everything I have read about Cousins, he's the floor leader on his team this season.

I have already gone on record in saying that if Grooms doesn't improve his shooting this summer, OU will continue to struggle in half-court sets with double-downs on his teammates who are a threat to score from anywhere.

Still, I have a feeling Kruger will go with Grooms and Blair at the point and hope that Hornbeak and Cousins (if he picks OU) can develop into adequate back ups. I personally believe he has set his sights on the point guards OU is in on in the 2013 class, mainly Clark and Woodward. He may go after a scoring JUCO guard or wing, but I don't see OU signing another point guard in the 2012 class. I think that's why the recruits we have offered so far are all wings or bigs.

Agreed. First, I doubt there are any pg's available this late in the process that are definitively better than Grooms. Second, we don't want to scare off the pg's we're after for 2013. Best to just sit tight at the pg spot, and improve it through recruiting the following year.

Redshirting Arent would keep him on scholarship for an extra year. I realize that we'll already have a bunch of open scholarships after next season, but that seems like a bit of a waste nonetheless. Wouldn't the team be better off using that scholarship on someone who is potentially a difference-maker instead of giving another year to someone we already know isn't one?

Yes. Not to mention, redshirting Arent isn't going to help him. He won't be a noticeably better player b/c of it.

Yes, let's keep our worst scholarship player on campus another year...great idea.
