>>>>>>OU-Hawaii Gameday Thread<<<<<<

Re: >>>>>>OU-Hawaii Gameday Thread<<<<<<

It is easy to point to refs & OU mental mistakes, but Hawaii has a really good team when they get hot. Aggressive guards, big man who can score, play at a frenetic pace. This team could be in the big dance and if they are, I might pick them to win a couple of rounds.

This is how I feel. The refs weren't especially biased. They called a lot, but they were calling fouls on both teams. I'm sure a free throw contest does somewhat benefit the underdog, but that's no excuse. Fortunately, we gutted out the win. Hawaii looks like a pretty decent club and they've played well with the home advantage at the event. No shame in a close win, just a lot to work on.

Special shoutout to Lattin for coming up big in this game where we really needed him.

Unless he is a closet Hawaii fan, I think he was just happy he wasn't calling a blowout.

As a neutral fan, close games and upsets are always exciting. We shouldn't take it personal that Brad was enjoying a suprisingly close game like that.

I wholeheartedly disagree, at 1 point it looked like they started calling a little bit of makeup but the way they were calling fouls on our guys on D they were scared of any contact. It was making it impossible to play any semblance of defense. On the opposite end we had to get fouled twice to get a call which should say something considering the total amount we ended up shooting.

Once we go into ISU, KU it'll be the same so it's either put up or shut up. Good teams find a way to win.

I think it's unprofessional on his part to say we were "lucky to win." Was it a tough game? Absolutely, but we outshot them, overall and from three, out rebounded them, had more assists.

We were 6 point favorites as of this afternoon, if I recall correctly, and we won on the road by three. Again, a tough game, but we toughed it out and came away with the win. We didn't get lucky.

Re: >>>>>>OU-Hawaii Gameday Thread<<<<<<

What a mess of a game. I can't stand watching a game played like that. Most important part is they got the win but that will definitely put some hair on their chest. If you have to play one of every type of game a year the Sooners can check off the bat **** crazy from the list...

I agree. In the end the fouls balanced out, but it was that stretch in the first half that the free throws basically got them right back in it. They don't get 15 free throws in the first half, we win by 10+. Kept them in the game to the point where they said 'hey, were not just hanging around with a top 5 team, we can beat them'. Gave them hope

I get what you are saying, but not many teams will go the last 9 minutes without a field goal and win. In that regard it could be considered a lucky win. But in the end they don't ask you how you win they ask if you won.

BOOMER

Re: >>>>>>OU-Hawaii Gameday Thread<<<<<<

Another poster mentioned this earlier, as the #3 team in the country, OU needs to be ready to get every opponent's best shot. This also includes the bottom teams in the Big XII. This is why I have respect for Kansas' conference streak, everyone wants to knock them off, but they win year after year ... until this year!

Ask Dayton how it felt to go 9 minutes without scoring...they still lost

Exactly. That's what so often gets overlooked: A long stretch of calling it one's teams way can impact a game greatly. The other team gets tentative because of all the whistles, the team benefiting from the calls gets its mojo back (and, in this case, their home crowd back into it). As I mentioned earlier, this game reminded me of the Creighton loss last year. A 10- or 12-minute stretch when the officials just went crazy with the whistles and every possible call went the underdog's way.

Against Creighton, we fell behind because of that weird stretch and those we closed the gap at the end, we couldn't come all the way back. Tonight, we did a great job of keep UH from ever gaining a sizable lead (and all their small leads were short-lived). It was them, not us, who was fighting from behind down the stretch and we held them off.

All things considered, a terrific win. UH shot free throws much better than they usually do (they came back to earth a little bit down the stretch but still bettered their season average) and hit some contested shots they won't always hit.

We missed our last seven shots, but we went 15-4 from the line in that same stretch. UH was only IN the game because they were awarded so many free throws and were shooting them so well for the first two-thirds of the game. What, they get credit for their free throws but we don't?

Sorry, points are points, and we got more than they did.

Funny, MSU trails by double digits before squeaking out an OT win over Oakland in a virtual home game and the announcers and postgame commentators rush to praise them for a gritty win. We lead nearly the entire second half on the road -- we were down twice by one point for a total of one minute of playing time -- and we're lucky to win?

Re: >>>>>>OU-Hawaii Gameday Thread<<<<<<

Several thoughts:

Bench lost a big lead again. Got to develop that depth and get more consistent play.

Buddy sort of disapeared in the second half. They covered us outside well and bumped our guards quite a bit. That is why Lattin got so many points. They were shutting down the treys and left him to roam.

I didn't hear the guys ragging Cousins on his free throws giving him any credit when he hit 4 in a row in crunch time. I was afraid he was going to get called on crossing the line. He plays it pretty close.

Hawaii was playing out of their minds. hitting a lot of shots they normally don't. Bobbit is a very good player and had a career game.

I know some of you want to play the good sport and point out that the fouls were more even in the second half but the officiating was pathetic and biased. The technical foul on Buford was an official looking to call something. Buford wasn't even aware that he bumped the guy. Our starters average less than 9 fouls a game so far this season. Tonight they had 16. You wonder why they were able to penetrate. We went inside a lot in the second half and just got hammered on the inside shots with no fouls called. The officials were more interested in making the crowd happy than in calling the game right.

Also it was nice to have a close game as it allowed the posters who normally trash the team to come out with a vengence. They must have really been bored since the Memphis game. Haven't seen them around.

Re: >>>>>>OU-Hawaii Gameday Thread<<<<<<

I forgot about that Buford call. It was pretty bad.

I still don't think the refs were anymore biased than in most road games. I do think that a quick whistle almost always helps the underdogs and these refs had about the quickest whistle I ever saw.

Re: >>>>>>OU-Hawaii Gameday Thread<<<<<<

It was a sloppy game but it evened out. Both teams went 24-33 from the line. Both teams got a BS technical foul called against them. Both teams committed a stupid foul on a late 3 point shot. Both coaches have some legitimate gripes.

On a positive note, winning an ugly, close game like this may be good for the team. They can't be complacent after a game where they go the last 9 minutes without a field goal and still won.

I think we know the 8-man rotation for close games.

I'm with you on the MSU thing. And I don't feel it was lucky. We won because we were better over 40 minutes. Points are poimts and we had 3 more at the end. I was just playing Devils advocate on why it could be viewed as lucky by some.

Re: >>>>>>OU-Hawaii Gameday Thread<<<<<<

Pretty bad, and huge at the time. One of the calls that helped UH get back in it. That, and Spangler having to sit with a second foul that never happened were key plays in helping UH get rolling.

Re: >>>>>>OU-Hawaii Gameday Thread<<<<<<

If you believe this, you know nothing about basketball. Spangler is the engine that drives us on offense and defense. Sometimes that shows on the stat sheet. Sometimes it doesn't.

Ha! You may be right! But what I'm seeing isn't the Spangler he can be or should be. He was a no factor in the 1st half and somewhat better in the 2nd. Regardless of your opinion if we don't get more from him then he gave tonight... Statistically speaking... then we won't achieve what we all want. We gotta have more from him then good screens and leadership

7 points and 7 rebounds isn't a bad game. Spangler has been great this year and this game doesn't change that.

I agree. Never said he hadn't been. I think my point has been missed so this will be my last comment. He had 2 points, 2 boards and 2 fouls in the 1st half. Maybe that's a product of the flow of the game. But I'm guessing ryan expects more from his game.

Now I remember why I quit posting. I'll stop again to some of your approval I'm sure!
Happy holidays. Boomer.
