OU-Northwestern State Game Thread

Doolittle did not look comfortable yet. Looked like he got about as many minutes as he'd admit to wanting.

he's fine.

The defense was better in the second half, I will admit I was harsh at halftime. However, OU is 320th in ppg allowed as of now. That will not fly later in the season. Hopefully OU can get that below 100th.

Trae Young is getting better. I still dont think he can guard at the next level, but it doesnt matter. Hes a high lottery pick. I was wrong on that.

OU plays at a pace where ppg isnt a good measure of their defense. It needs to get better, but we arent the 320th best defensive team.

Considering OU’s pace PPG isn’t going to be a good marker for the defense.

The official scorekeeper reviewed the play where Trae threw the ball against the backboard and give him the assist so he tied the record.

Someone commented on a player not being able to catch one of Trae's passes. There were very, very few plays like that. I came away from the game thinking how well the other players on the court were constantly aware they might get a pass at any moment and were ready to score when they got the ball. Without that, Trae doesn't tie the record.

OU is also playing at a pace few teams in the country are matching. One leads to the other -- that's not to say there's no room for improvement, but if we continue to play at this pace, we're not going to see Kelvin Sampson numbers on defense. It's just not going to happen.

It's ironic, though: Lots of fans ragged on Kelvin for not being Billy Tubbs on the offensive side; now Coach Kruger and the team are catching grief for not defending like a Kelvin Sampson team.

couldnt agree with Lad more. PPG is a silly metric for evaluating this groups defense. I believe comparing offensive efficiencies would be more telling.

Their style leads to a lot of open court and fractured play so it will be the 1-on-1 and on-ball defensive skills that will really show if we're progressing defensively or not.

So first being in the right spots (when in half court) Then working on communicating, good switches, hands up, cheating a bit to the lane when able, shading guys one way or another. Theyve all (cept for Doolittle) got their spots down and switching, and weakside responsibilities down low etc... . So now it's on to individual defensive skills.

The point total means little when we're adding to the oppositions' possession numbers by a good 40%. Of course it's going to be high. But our forte isn't clamping down on defense for minimal possessions. It's providing proper defensive principles for many more possessions.

Under 100 would be impossible, simply due to the pace they play at.

OU is 32nd in deficiency efficiency according to Kenpom.

I know the ppg number is ugly, but we're sitting at 32nd in defensive efficiency according to KenPom. I'm not sure how long into the season until his numbers are truly accurate, but that seems about right.

We've had some poor stretches for sure, but overall with our offensive pace I feel like we've been pretty dang good for starting 2 true freshman.

We aren't the fifth fastest team in the country and are defending forA LOT more possessions than most teams. Even a team playing below average ball is going to score points against us because of the extra possessions.
