Celebrating on a Big 12 opponent’s home court hasn’t been a familiar sight for Oklahoma in recent seasons.
The Sooners have lost 19 of 21 road games against league foes heading into their game at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Oklahoma State.
Why has it been so difficult to win road games in the conference?
“The teams are better, to start with,” OU coach Lon Kruger said Monday. “The Big 12 is the best league in the country. We are realizing that. We had some good nonconference road wins. We have to compete to get the same result in conference play.”
Oklahoma’s only league road wins during this recent stretch have come in dramatic fashion. The first was in the 2016-17 campaign at West Virginia, an 89-87 overtime decision settled when Jordan Woodard made a layup with 2.2 seconds left. Last season, Trae Young hit two free throws with 7.9 seconds remaining in a 90-89 triumph at TCU.
But outside of that, it has been tough sledding for the Sooners when they wear non-white jerseys. This season, they’ve absorbed close losses at Kansas (70-63), Texas Tech (66-59) and Texas (75-72).
