OU - UT Game

If you had asked most of us what's the worst thing that could happen in a game (other than another injury), the reply would be "getting both of our bigs in foul trouble early". That happened, and we withstood it, going in with a half-time lead. IMO, another masterful coaching job.

I felt good about the game at halftime when we had kept the game close with both Jo and Nicole on the bench for most of the half.

Year in and year out, Sherri never ceases to amaze me. She finds a way to win.

While I certainly agree Sherri is a good coach, beating Texas isn't anything to crow about right now.

True, however so far I have seen West Va., Tech, Iowa State, Tex., TCU, and of course the Sooners. It looks to me it is going to be a dog fight for second place in the Big XII. Texas has some nice pieces, they just don't play really well together yet. TCU is horrible, the rest of the Big XII can beat any one on any given night. Our weakness obviously is how well we do behind the arc night in and night out. We are playing decent defense but we really need to take care of our rebounding problems. I don't think any one, out side of Baylor, really has a dominating force in the middle. If we continue to improve on our spacing, and can play a drive and kick out game, these kids will probably surpass even my expectations. Reeling in our foul problems and playing smart basketball will do wonders for this team. With Sharane playing to her potential, gives us probably the most potent guard attack in the Big XII.

Good post. I believe it was Tango who posted several days ago that he would favor putting Sharane in the starting lineup and leave her there realizing she will make some mistakes. I agree with that philosophy. She is overall the best athlete we have at her height. I think if given the playing time, she will not only improve what she does well but will also improve in areas that makes you say, "what was she thinking!". I think most will agree she has a high ceiling.

We did beat West Virginia when we weren't hitting (or shooting) threes.

Yes we did, and we out rebounded them too. However I don't think we will shoot 39 free throws again unless its against the Mountaineers at their place. I just hope we can continue to improve and play solid defense and rebound when we have those nights we can't buy a 3.

If West Virginia would 'back off" and not foul so much, they just might win a few of these close games they are losing....
But GREAT win against Texas ....any win in the Big 12 is huge, as everybody is playing for 2nd place. Let the fun begin!! Should be a lot of good games ahead!!!

Aside from us rolling over at the end of the game to make the end score more respectable than it should have been, it was a fun game to watch.

I was worried early-on when we were on track to each score about 100 (12 minutes left in the first, the score was about 23-21 or so), but then, they couldn't keep up.

Texas is fun to beat... admittedly, they were more fun when I actually gave them a chance to beat us. Now, I can correctly predict them go out of the NCAA in the first round annually :D

I was at the game with my family. This game wasn't as physical as the WV game, but Texas was playing physical. I was surprised at what Fussell was getting away with. I guess I hadn't realized that her offense is composed of shoving her defender out of the way to get an open shot. Luckily, Sharane wasn't having any of that.

Cokie Reed is another player, like Ashley Gayle, that I expected much more from in her career. She doesn't even look as good now as she did when she was a freshman.

I have to admit that in the 10 years that I've been going to this game in Austin, this was the first time that I noticed that a Texas fan was making an ass out of himself. At first, it was kinda funny how much of an idiot he was making himself look, but when Nicole Griffin fouled out, he started yelling at our bench. He was clearly in his 60's, so he should have known better. I'll just leave it at that.

You may have noticed because, I'm guessing here, that was the smallest OU-tu crowd in Austin in 10 years???

I noticed that twice on TV. Nothing was called either time I noticed it.

It might have been. 10 years ago, I was getting seats a week ahead of time, high up, behind the baskets. This year, I literally bought the tickets online around midnight the night before the game, and I got seats 7 rows behind the OU bench. I watched the game on TV afterwards and I'm on the screen a handful of times.

Back in Norman either my freshman or sophomore year (either 2002 or 2003), a loud lady whorn fan was yipping during our foul shots. It was like "YIGH YIGH YIGH" or something. Sooooo annoying.

Another thing I remember about the early years was that Texas' bench was one that would try to do little bench-chants. You know, an unenthusiastic "d-fence (clap clap)" and such.. the type of thing that coaches want to see from their players.

The best way to put a damper on such bench spirit was to counter it with another cheer, like "O-U! (clap clap)" or something.

Texas used to be good in the early aughts. Then they thought they could buy wins by buying the Duke coach. Silly whorns.

Gary Blair, if you notice, does about the same thing. He almost always starts yelling at one of his players when an opposing team is shooting free throws. I've seen him do that multiple times in Norman and have seen him do that on TV as well.

And GiGi was widely regarded, at that time, one of the 3 best coaches in women's basketball (along with Jean-o and Patty Summit!). Who knew that Duke University was the recruiting force for her as a head coach???

See above.
