OU v. SWOSU

I honestly thought we looked good. Relatively balanced. Lots of chemistry. Obviously have a lot to fix but I think overall we will have a good season.

Yep, I agree! Although if Gioya can't return this year, it will be a blow.

I want to be playing the best in Feb/Mar and not necessarily Nov/Dec. Gabbi looks better. Peyton looks like Peyton! Maddie overall probably looked the best she has since before first injury. Very promising year! T'Ona's shooting looks much improved which will improve her overall game. Gileysa still looks to be favoring her injured knee and may not be 100% this year. But she has good future ahead of her! Great passing skills! Not the fastest on the court but great awareness and anticipation (similar to Peyton) will make her very valuable on the court. Very impressed with EJ as well! Vivi looks healthy and I expect good things from her this year.

SWOSU may be one of the best exhibition teams I've seen. They have some good players.

Lots to work on but lots of promise for the season IMO. Excited to see how the season progresses!

+1! Chemistry is awesome. I have a feeling we will put a lot of points on the board this year.

Glad you all got a chance to see Ej work. She has the potential to be very good. She's just beginning.

Very impressed with EJ tonight! Sherri said she's only played basketball for 4 years? LOTS of potential with her!

Am I the only one that saw Maddie steal a pass from a SW player in the corner? Or, am I the only one that saw Maddie simply take the ball away from a player who drove across the lane? Perhaps, I'm the only one that saw Maddie tip a pass straight up in the air as everyone took off. When it finally came down in Gabbi's hands,, Maddie and two others were under the offensive boards already.

But, she had zero steals?

Was at the game and Maddie definitely had a couple of steals and also had a couple of unforced turnovers. Didn't play bad but not close to expectation Sherri had talked her game up to being except for about 5 minutes of the fourth quarter when she was outstanding on both ends of the court. Seemed to back off and lose her aggression the toward the end of the game.

I expect her consistency and focus to improve a bunch going forward. Didn't play close to her "A" tonight.

I thought that Maddie was our best defender throughout the game. She did make some steals and shut down the one three-point shooter. She did pass well throughout. She didn't shoot well until later in the game. But, she was filling up the stat sheet with something at all times. I don't think she did as well as I had hoped. But, she was the key player other than Peyton that made so much happen.

I didn't understand why they called traveling on her. Missed whatever that was.

I thought we played a very sound fundamental game. Our gap defense was outstanding, there were arms and hands every where. Maddie, Peyton, Gabbi, T'ona, Derica, LaNesia, and Penzo played excellent defense through out. Our three posts were fairly solid. We missed some easy inside shots, but I liked the aggression from all three. Shaya needs to abandon even thinking about the 3, she is solid on defense and needs to be a passionate rebounder. When we shared the basketball and made the extra pass, we were outstanding, even the dribble penetration was good. We have the making of a really good team.

The three main negatives I saw, was blocking out could have been better, our focus kind of waned from time to time, and the old pump fake would have paid dividends tonight.

You could tell the kids really worked on their foot work defensively in the off season and during early practice. Our posts were good about their positioning and you didn't see a lot of slapping. I was proud of Kaylon and hope she can continue through the season. EJ was a very pleasant surprise, and may really contribute this year. I thought she might be a year away, but looked good tonight.

From the way that they started, I had the impression that they were more interested in tempo, spacing, and passing than they were on actually making the shots. I think they may have been trying to establish a style that they intend to use throughout the year, with the assumption that the shots will fall if you are open enough.

If you are 5-7, all of the pump fakes in the world aren't going to get you open in the lane. They can stand still and reach over you. You have to be either open enough to shoot, or have an outlet pass available.

I know it was only an exhibition, but I am really pleased with how they played, especially EJ, Penzo and Maddie. Peyton's gonna be a beast.

I think first game L. Williams starts in place of Wyatt, unless Gioya is back.

Maddie looked free and easy out there. I was impressed with EJ.

That's who I would start too. But, she has got to stop trying to do too much. Just take what's open and what you can create without taking unnecessary risks. She is definitely the quickest player we have there and the best defender.

The team in general needs to stop trying to always get to the rim. Take the 12-15 ft jump shot and we will be fine. Maybe it was first game jitters but I thought we rushed too many shots and would have benefited by making an extra pass in several situations.

Blocking out needs a lot of work. What worked last night will not work against Baylor or Texas.

We have talked about Hailey Tucker on here. While she didn't shoot well last night, you could tell she is going to be a really good player for the Lady Bulldogs.

When Kaylon had 11 pts and 5 boards and had the worst stats of the 3 centers, that's a good thing.

My biggest surprise last night was EJ. She looked like a sophomore rather than a freshman. She still has plenty to learn but she is off to a good start.

Defense- We have to do a better job of guarding the 3 pt line and help defense. Tighten up those areas and it will make a major improvement.

If Sherri wants to look for easy shots, I would suggest the best way to do that is what I mentioned the other day...push the ball by grabbing a rebound, make a quick pass to the wing, pass down court and see if you can get a shot inside of 10 feet before the defense can set up. Last night, whether it was Gabbi, Peyton, Maddie, etc bringing the ball up, they were running about 75-80%. You aren't out running the defense doing that. I like quick shots but they need to be good shots. Not only are you likely to get better shots by pushing the ball, you are also running the opponent into the ground.

We are seeing football offenses operating faster than ever before. Making the defense play at breakneck speed causes them to get out of position and make mistakes they would not ordinarily make. This is true for basketball as well. Billy Tubbs was very successful winning with that philosophy. But, it starts with a rebound and quick outlet pass.

I thought our outlets and getting down court was executed very well, however I have to agree, you have to go all out and at least make the defense honest if you can't get to the rim, we tended to allow them to set up and not put a lot of pressure on the defense in transition. I think that will change when we get further down the road.
