Cold beer arrives, but it’s not cheap
It wasn’t cheap.
It was, however, available.
Also, history-making?
Sooner fans will be the judge of that.
Yet, however it’s judged, it was indeed a first Friday night at Lloyd Noble Center, where the Oklahoma women opened their season against Western Kentucky.
Not only was it the beginning of a new season, it was also the first time alcoholic beverages were available to anybody 21 or older at an OU athletic venue.
Only beer was available, though there was a fair amount of choice. Between three beer stands — separate from all other concessions — along the upper concourse, 20 ounces of beer, on draft, was available for $8.50.
The on-tap choices included Blue Moon, New Belgium, Modelo, Coors Light, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Goose Island IPA and Ziegenbock, the price the same for each.
On the arena’s second level, next to Legacy Court, 16 ounce cans of beer were available. Those choices included Bud Light, Coors Light, Michelob Ultra and Modelo.
It became available for purchase the moment the arena doors opened and became unavailable when the fourth quarter of the Sooner-Lady Topper game began.
For men’s games, it will be available until 15 minutes remain in the second half.
If the beer being sold in the building made the estimated crowd of 2,907 any more boisterous, it was not apparent.

Youth movement: OU has to be the youngest team in the Big 12 this season and might be next year, too.
Sooner coach Sherri Coale started three freshmen: Tatum Veitenheimer, Madi Williams and Mandy Simpson; and two sophomores: Shaina Pellington and Ana Llanusa.
Also, there are no juniors on the roster and only two seniors, Gileysa Penzo and Ijeoma Odimgbe.

Two unavailable: Freshman Jesse Murcer,
out of Westmoore, and Penzo, in her fifth year in the program, were both unavailable for Friday’s opener due to being in concussion protocol.
Murcer played 24 minutes in the Sooners’ lone exhibition, finishing with six points and six steals in a 119-45 victory over Northeastern State. Penzo played 17 minutes, scored five points and dished five assists in the same game after playing in 31 games, including seven starts last season.

Tip-ins: It is Coale’s 23rd year directing the program and Friday’s victory brought her career coaching mark to 482-242 … The two teams combined on 51 (WKU 25, OU 26) turnovers … The last Sooner prior to Williams to score 15 points, grab 15 rebounds and record three blocks was Courtney Paris … The freshman record for 3-pointers in a game Taylor Robertson broke previously belonged to Morgan Hook (2010) and Derica Wyatt (2013)

Next: Now 1-0 following their 90-83 victory over Western Kentucky, the Sooners return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday to face Northwestern (La.) State.
After that, the schedule gets serious. OU is at No. 22 South Florida on Nov. 18 before opening the Junkanoo Jam, in The Bahamas, against Alabama-Birmingham and closing the event against Clemson or No. 11 Tennessee.
The Sooners then remain on the road to face New Mexico on Nov. 28 and Auburn on Dec. 2.
