our next loss...

I want Capel gone but I really don't want him out because of NCAA violoations crap

So the OU Athletic Dep. is using the cover of NCAA violations as the "reason" for the firing?

Sure. They can do that as far as I know. And it's probably better than the reason being "he sucks", so at least he could get a head coaching job later on under the guise of "having learned his lesson, Capel gets another chance."

From purely a money perspective, whether or not it's the true main reason, it's a good way to try to save money by not having to buy out the contract. A recent Emig (I think) blog article discussed this point.

Capel's lawyers are gonna rip any NCAA violations nonsense as cause for firing, he will get paid trust me. The man has lawyers, good ones.

Yeah I bet, especially with his wife being one. If OU gets hit with violations this summer he probably doesn't have much of a case. If this is true.

no he wont. this actually helps him.

Hope those lawyers can do wonders with that "NCAA violations mean we can fire you without paying the buyout" clause that was in the previously mentioned Emig blog post.

He won't get paid? Why? And why would that help him?

he's much more employable as "coach who was at OU when violations happened and he might have had some hand in them"

rather than

"coach who sucks"

When are these violations going to be released to the public by the way? It takes OSU self-reporting 1 day to get into the news cycle, yet the NCAA launches 1+ year investigations into a player who isn't here anymore? If there are any inside info on violations TBA I'd love to hear that too, sincerely.

I disagree. It's the bandwagon fans across the country who don't pay attention that only attach 1 thought to a coach's career somewhere. People like that will only think of a Capel or a Herb Sendek or a Gillespie as the coach who failed here or the coach who cheated or the coach who drinks.

College ADs aren't gonna ignore the coaching job he's done in the past 2 years. They do their homework, hiring a bball coach is a huge decision. They also won't ignore that he had a top 5 team one year, or his success at VCU starting out. I don't think he's as bad as our record has been the last 2 years, nor do I think he's as good as our record was Blake's sophomore year. AD's won't pick one reason for him getting fired here and ignore the other, they will judge his success, failure, and possible violations all.

I think if he gets fired Jeff's coaching career is over. He'll be a front office NBA type guy.

Gillespie as the coach who failed here or the coach who cheated or the coach who drinks.

Drinks and drives (2 DUI's and another dropped), and failed at a team where the next guy did fairly well.

Can't call an AD who would pass on that a bandwagon fan as much as prudent. He's a good coach but he's also got some documented issues. That said, I agree with your overall point; it's just that BCG isn't the best example of it.

wall of text crits me for 12,000hp

if you think AD's make the final decision about a coach being hired you are high

Wouldn't take this as a good sign for Capel.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jeff Capel may be commenting about his future as Oklahoma's basketball coach. OU athletic director Joe Castiglione, however, is not.

Asked before tonight's OU-Baylor Big 12 Tournament game whether he wanted to make a statement regarding his embattled coach, Castiglione said he would do so at the "appropriate time. Now is not that time."

Reread my post, you missed the context I said that in. That's not even the entire sentence. I wasn't saying anything about Gillespie as a coach, I was disputing that AD's only look at how a coach gets fired or 1 thing about his tenure to evaluate him. Coolm said that it would be better for Capel to be fired for NCAA violations than for sucking, because it would help him get another job if he wasn't fired for being bad. But it won't help because AD's aren't bandwagon fans. Fans only remember 1 thing about a coaches from other teams. I remember Eustachy partied and drank with co-eds and Tim Floyd cheated. AD's evaluate everything about a coach's tenure, their jobs depend on their hires.
